it quite the opposite

there are more snakes in a built up area than in bushland

why?

simply put food, snakes eat mice n rats where do you get a lot of mice n rats where you get a large build up of humans, restaurants etc

our local snake guy gets loads of call for surfers etc and the odd cal for the hinterland,

personally we have seen about ten snakes on our property over six years so there there,
just leave them alone they wont attack as your way way to big too eat ;)

Good post :)

All of my call outs for snakes last year were ones in gardens and a couple in the house plus sheds but all were either messy/cluttered properties, some with broken or no fly screens and one woman who said her cat has a habit of bringing them in.

Thanks brissybee. Please people, could you share your experiences? I am truly concerned about this.

the only snakes i encounter in sydney are one eyed snakes. they are quite domesticated but aggressive when you show signs of surrender.

the other ones are in taronga zoo.

You have a phobia to everything that crawls and snakes. Forget australia then. You'd most likely live in a semi tropical part of the country and therefore the insects are huge and numerous by comparison to canukistan and if you try to live in an area that is also suburban to rural you'll eventually meet up with snakes... I can only imagine the screaming that you would emit when you saw your first spider running along your ceiling. These things are the size of your hand... Or! the first flying cockroach that lands in your hair on a hot sticky summer night. Not like any cockroach you've seen in canada that's for sure! they're 2" long and there's lots of them - everywhere.

Where about in canukistan do you live.

Okay, someone please post the pic of the python in the Christmas wreath. 'Tis the season soon after all.

To the OP: we moved here from Canada. We live in semi-rural hicksville. I've only seen one snake in three years, a dead one that had been hit by a car and was lying coiled up by the side of the road.

The idea of the spiders bothered me more, TBH. I've gotten used (somewhat) to them too. So, there's redbacks in the garage and back yard. Oh well. They were here first.

The snakes in Australia

When I go out on my velocipede I sometimes see snakes, always dead and that is somewhat unusual to see in my part of the world.

I say somewhat unusual as there is a plague of cane toads in QLD.

Snake come along, sees what he thinks is a tasty cane toad meal, strikes and before it has even had time to take a couple of mouthfuls, it is dead due to ingestion of the cane toad venom. Highly toxic stuff.

So there is not a dearth of snakes on the Gold Coast but that does not mean to say I would walk across an open field, besides the grass ticks would probably get you first if you did.

Also found 3 dead kangaroos on the roadway but they only cause a problem if you run over them with your bicycle, which to be quite honest, means you should not be out on your bike.

<<Should have gone to Spec-Savers>> and all that.

Possums really splatter.

I know of someone who was bitten whilst jogging by the river in high spring. He died 6 months later of a heart attack linked to the damage caused when he was bitten. In his early 40s. Fit footy guy 6'3". Very sad but very rare.

I have seen one sliding across the road as I've been driving, but that's it (she says!). Some areas would be better than others..............

Worker killed by taipan in central Queensland

An Ergon Energy employee died almost instantly after being bitten by a deadly snake while out on a job in central Queensland.

Yeppoon crew leader Andrew Vaughan was working his way through dense bushland on Friday with a backhoe operator trying to beat a path to a pole that needed maintenance work.

During the work, Mr Vaughan lost contact with the crew, who raised the alarm as soon as they realised, according to an internal email sent out to Ergon Energy staff by operations executive general manager Peter Billing, who called the death "tragic".

Mr Vaughan was already dead by the time he was found after a huge search by the police, SES volunteers and Ergon Energy employees.

Been here seven years and seen three. Beautiful one on the verandah, one curled up under a bush and an enormous one stretched across the whole road - unfortunately it was dark and I didn't see him until the last minute and there was no way round so I went over the top of him but I went back to look a few minutes later and he'd gone. All Pythons. Love them but if you're frightened of them, I honestly don't think they're going to be around in your day to day life.

Isn't that the elusive spitting snake... only found in certain suburbs of Sydney... Never found in far north Queensland or out west.
