Yay! Well done Amanda!! I used to enjoy pssive smoking for a while when I gave up...:o You'll be pleased to hear that after a while, the smell starts to repel you, rather than attract you...

After reading his book I can only say one thing:

I am a non-smoker and will not pick up another cigarette as long as I live.

Anyone who knows me, will not believe that :D but my whole perception of smoking and stopping smoking has changed within the 3 hours it's taken me to read that book to the point where I feel physically sick at the thought of having another cigarette.

That must be some book!!! Well done Wendy!:thumbsup: We're all behind you!

I haven't had a cigarette since 4:30pm, which although it isn't long normally when I try to stop I would be pulling my hair out and wandering around aimlessly trying not to think about a having ciggy.

Instead I'm sat here smiling thinking I do not want a cigerette.

Great! It's a lovely feeling when you give up.

Re: Smokers

  • Smoking cessation timeline - the health benefits over time
  • In 20 minutes, your blood pressure and pulse rate decrease, and the body temperature of your hands and feet increase.
  • Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. At 8 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood decreases to normal. With the decrease in carbon monoxide, your blood oxygen level increases to normal.
  • At 24 hours, your risk of having a heart attack decreases.
  • At 48 hours, nerve endings start to regrow and the ability to smell and taste is enhanced.
  • Between 2 weeks and 3 months, your circulation improves, walking becomes easier and you don’t cough or wheeze as often. Phlegm production decreases. Within several months, you have significant improvement in lung function.
  • In 1 to 9 months, coughs, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease as you continue to see significant improvement in lung function. Cilia, tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs, regain normal function.
  • In 1 year, risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack is reduced to half that of a smoker.
  • Between 5 and 15 years after quitting, your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
  • In 10 years, your risk of lung cancer drops. Additionally, your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decrease. Even after a decade of not smoking however, your risk of lung cancer remains higher than in people who have never smoked. Your risk of ulcer also decreases.
  • In 15 years, your risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack in similar to that of people who have never smoked. The risk of death returns to nearly the level of a non-smoker

You should be very, very proud of yourself for giving up smoking. You can see from the timeline above that you will have already made improvements to your health.
As an ex smoker, gave up 13 years ago, I know how hard it can get.
Keep going,
jacqui:D

Well it's been almost 24 hours since my last cigarette. It's been quite hard this morning, and I think it's because I didn't have my 'special' ciggie - for me thats the one first thing in a morning that doesn't actually taste of anything and doesn't do anything at all for me as I need another within 10 minutes . But I have resisted all temptation and as the day is going by it's getting easier.

I'm made up for you!
Was you thinking about giving up before this thread, or did the thread prompt you to go out and buy the book?
I'm expecting mine any day :)

Wow you guys are doing great. That book is bloody good. Having the "i'm a non-smoker" attitude right from the start is a really good way to look at it.

FANTASTIC! Both of you are doing so well.

It IS hard - no doubt about it. I gave up 12 years ago and understand what it feels like. It does get a lot easier - I promise.

I found chewing gum helped me when ever I fancied a fag, I'd chew instead.

This is the first time I've ever got past the 24 - 30 hour stage

I only bought the book because I saw it whilst out shopping, and to be honest I wanted to read it and say 'what a load of crap that guy talked, no way would that stop me', so you can imagine how shocked I was to get half way through it and him say 'light up a cigrette' and I didn't want to - I did have that cigarette, and it made me feel really queasy. :o

It tells you not to substitute cigarettes with anything - you are a non smoker and therefore don't need to  (I have eaten a lot of biscuits today though :o:D)

I didn't even want to stop smoking until Saturday :D

I think it's the stubborn side of me that's getting me through it this time really (and the greedy side), I don't want to give in to temptation as I worked out if I do that cigarette will cost me approx $73,000

It's now been 63 hours since my last ciggie  I could murder one right now though :o

Well done Wendy! Stay on here and chat until the feeling passes. $73,000 - Oh my, that is well worth giving up for. Don't forget the compound interest if you put the price of a packet of fags into the bank everyday. Now work out what you'll save in 6 months and what lovely things you'll buy with that money!

I spend approx $150 - $180 per fortnight on cigs, should be able to get a nice new car with that amount
