Sitting by the pool.....

Our friends were very, very lucky. Fire started 100m from their property but fortunately for them (not for others though), the wind was blowing away from them. They managed to get their horses out - no mean feat as they have 5 and only have a 2 horse trailer. They spent the night with friends and will be allowed to go back this morning
Where they live is (was) very nice. At least 27 homes have been lost and one person is dead. Very sad

Hope it stays away from you but keep safe and remember as important as bricks and mortar are to us they are insignificant compared to our lives.

Hope they are OK. The pictures are truly awful and reports are now saying 40 homes have been lost as well as the poor man who died defending his home.

We have no intention of ever staying to fight a fire. As long as we and the dogs are safe, I don't give a shit what happens to the house. We have plenty of insurance and would get a spanking brand new home! It would also put an end to all the renovations/work that I keep postponing

Indeed, wishing all the best for anyone facing adversity
I remember well the first time I saw a fire on the horizon and I feel for the people facing it down and the choices that have to be made are heart-wrenching.
We have an 'emergency box' packed at all times for such situations, photos, insurance docs and the like.
You don't really get a sense of the danger of living in some parts of Oz until you see it first hand.
Good luck to you and yours.

Thanks NB. The fire is heading in the opposite direction so no problem there

That's certainly the case in Wanneroo, we get called out daily at this time of year and we're a volunteer bushfire brigade.

Indeed, I have thought about moving more than once but the semi-rural outlook suits me very well.

Just listening to a report on the radio and the authorities are saying that this fire had the potential to have been much, much worse. If they hadn't have put the resources in that they did, it could have been 450 homes instead of 45. Scary stuff

We arrived in Australia in July and by October we were very close to several bush fires.
It's very scary and I can't imagine what it must be like to lose your home and all your possessions in that way.
Let's hope the weather cools soon in WA, Vic and SA.
It's hot here today but only 35 rather than the 40 odd that other states have seen.
