Re: Should we get a dog?
My whippet bitch was put down last August (kidney failure) - it was so hard as she looked healthy and very mobile but was really very ill.
I miss her more in Australia than ever I think I was so wrapped up in the migration process I didn't allow myself time to grieve. I miss her tiny little grey body curled up next to me on the sofa, and how she would spend hours playing with the cat. She protected me fiercely and wouldn't let anyone come near me and was the best guard dog/house bitch I have ever owned. My colleagues in the vets commissioned an artist to do an oil painting of her and I was in two minds whether or not to ship it as my vet nurse pal who organised the painting said she would have loved it. I packed it up and when my boxes arrived, I was in tears when I remembered I had packed it and it is on my wall - my beautiful Rema. All this dog talk is making me miss her even more - her racing in the park and running towards my legs - missing me at the last minute (greyhound/whippet thing:p). If ever Mr PP and I can afford our own house, we shall get a whippet - just the right size and a good family dog. But as for my Rema, it's horrible how having her put down is getting to me now and not when she was put down. I am so glad I held her as she went - and it was done in my friends house - a vet I worked for and Rema spent many a time at his house when he held parties, so she was very relaxed.:( God don't we get attached to our animals. |

Have a big ((HUG)) Sam
I know just how you feel, my beloved cat Holly had to be put to sleep a couple of months before we came, he had stomach cancer, there was nothing they could do. It was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever had to do and even typing about it now brings the tears back. The only comfort is that it was the best thing as it had got to the stage where he was starting to suffer. We had him cremated and his ashes are buried under his favourite tree in the garden. OK, here is the link http://www.greyhoundsaspets.com.au/a...asp?menuid=126 The one I've got my eye on is Goldie..... |
Re: Should we get a dog?
I don't get the whole pet thing..... I quite enjoy visiting friends who have dogs, because then I can play with them for a while. But I'm glad to leave them behind and go back home.....the smells, hairs everywhere, poo in the garden, vets, responsibility, taking them for walks, etc etc.....not my cup of tea. :)

I always prefer bitches to dogs, think they have a better temperament. |

Ive found that when some people have brought their toddlers to my house in the past (in the uK) the mess left was shocking. |

Mr PP and I were going to get a blue heeler if/when we get a dog but we both decided that whippets suit us best. |

Im like that with kids - when my nephew used to touch and break everything in his path and stomp biscuits into the carpet and my sister would let him, I used to shudder at the sight of him.

I'm not looking forward to our baby becoming a toddler. I might trade him in for a rescue dog ! :D
A girl I used to know would happily give up responsibility the moment her toddler came into my flat and would let him trash the place. I had to lock my dog away as he wanted to pull her tail and Rema would have taken his face off. When parents allow their kids to pull animals around and say 'oh the dog/cat loves it' - it makes me angry as Im yet to find an animal that likes pain. The only thing that puts me off having a dog is the restrictions - they are such a tie. But Im sure when/if we get our own place we will get one. |
Re: Should we get a dog?
I fancied a Blue Heeler too, lovely looking dogs, but they're working dogs and I dont think they would suit my lifestyle...
As for kids, I hate it when people let their kids run riot - no respect  Dont worry Sam, if we ever come and visit Katie will be on her bestest behaviour!! :D |

My friend Erica, her daughter was well brought up and was never any trouble - sometimes I think family are worse for that kind of thing. God how time goes, how old is Katie now? I love blue heelers but I am a fully paid up member of the 'pointy snout club' I need another whippet. |
Re: Should we get a dog?
Katie is one (already!)
The good news is........ ........we're getting a greyhound?! The one I liked (Goldie) is possibly already adopted, the couple are going to see her over the weekend to make a decision, they have a free range rabbit apparently so that will depend on things. But they said if they have any doubts she is ours, otherwise she has a sister (Sandy) who is currently at the TAFE but she will get moved to the next available foster home and see how she goes with cats, kids, general temperament and all things being well we can have her instead... unless another suitable one comes in in the meantime. YAY, I am SO excited :thumbsup::thumbsup: |

OK, quick update, Goldie is being adopted by the people who saw her yesterday......... but we are probably having her sister, Sandy.
She is going into her foster home next week, so it will be a couple of weeks or so until she can come home. They test them with cats, kids and other dogs so as long as she goes well she will be the new member of our family. I am going to rename her Molly... Attached is a pic taken by the adoption lady So excited  |
