Are you suggesting that a long wait is justification for shafting the system? If you go to the immigration group it's full of people from all nations moaning about the wait for their visa. What a good job it is they just put up with it.

Well there's that
And also the fact that France has a compulsory national ID card system which makes it a tad harder to hide from the authorities or fool them
now let's hear it from all the civil liberties advocates
Maybe I'll start a new poll: For or against a compulsory national ID card Although I bet it's been done before. I'd better go and search first

For those on here who will read half of my post and start screaming that I am a commie-lover socialist bleeding heart, let me make it clear: I do not advocate the opening of borders to everyone. I do not think communism was/is a good thing. I just think that a little understanding for why people are driven to immigrate at all costs would not hurt. After all, most of us came here because we were searching for our better life. As Ponyrama put it in her earlier post, we are just lucky that we were given the opportunity to do it legally because most of us come from countries or backgrounds that gave us the tools and knowledge to do it. Others are not so lucky... Maybe sometimes we should try walking in other people's shoes before we condemn them...
As I was reading your post, the further I got the more I could imagine the predictable responses you were about to get...I think you've headed them off at the pass! Phew.

Thats bollocks and bollocks again! Some friends of mine who arrived here in Canberra at around the same time as my family and I are from Iran and they went the official route and they are here. They haven't complained about an excessive wait.

I was making a point that your country of origin makes a difference, you shouting everyone down cos now you're in and a true blue Aussie aint gonna change that.
are you seriously telling me that if you wanted better for you and yours, but weren't able to do it officially, you wouldn't explore other avenues?

It is! And a lot easier than paying people smugglers to get them across borders (into safe countries but let's not let that small detail get in the way) and onto dodgy boats in Indonesia.

You've become a bit of a nob since your arrival mate, they probably were able to come the official route because of erm education and career, but I bet they were scrutinized closer than you and I.

I believe that all Iranian's can just catch the train to Turkey, no visa required... so why catch a boat to Australia?
To 'escape' whatever it is they are escaping... or because of economic reasons?
Genuine question by the way... ones to which I have no idea of the answers.

would you care to detail those claims with facts then? Or should we just take your pro-Liberal leaning word for it?

No. They had to get three cars from the middle of Iraq to Bethlehem to deliver gifts (three wise men and all that). Anyway you can't go from Iraq to Israel/Jerusalem etc and they had to take a weird long convoluted route to get around all the politics and border restrictions - meaning they crossed into Turkey from Iraq, they were meant to go via Iran but couldnt as it would mean they might not get over the border. As they crossed into Turkey they promptly entered a 200km long battlefield and had to put their bullet proof vests back on. Then they had to go from Turkey to Syria but had to use different passports as they wouldnt get into Israel if they been through.....blah blah etc.....anyway it was very funny...as Top Gear usually is - but it really made a very good point about how difficult it is to travel freely in that part of the world without getting your head blown off!
