Sendling large files

Can't remember who was asking (and can't be arsed to search) but someone was asking about sending large files to the UK. Found this site linked the other day - looks pretty good. :)

I was one of them see

http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=344740

problem is a lot of downloads/sites limit you to 1gb and with video files that is often not enough.

Did find a program that will reduce dvd handycam recordings to smaller size
Window Media Encoder from microsoft of all people but it like everything else seems to be tempramental when it comes to the larger files.

Sending dvd discs loses the spontanuity of it all (probably spelt that wrong as crap speller).

Look up DivX compression tools. They are relatively cheap if you are encoding (i.e. trying to shrink your existing video down to a more manageable size) and free if you are decoding (therefore the recipients should be able to view with no problems at all).

The DivX decoder will be a plug-in for something like Windows Media Player, which is why the recipients shouldn't have any problems viewing it.

For example, I have a full version of the film "Jackass" which is very high quality and comes in at about 700MB after DiVX compression.

The next challenge is to see how I can shrink down "Debbie Does Dallas" to fit on my phone?

Hope this helps?

"Debbie Does Dallas" ... you are showing your age my husband just said a clasic of our time... do you know she disapeared never to be seen again Bambi Woods.

Problem is the Sony Handycam records in mpg format so I need to change teh mpg to wmv to get the size reduction.

Do you know any of the cheap tools you mention that would do this as the windows media encoder def upset with larger files.

Cheers.

Have you had a look at Windows Movie Maker? Haven't really used it myself but I know it will convert MPG to WMV and best of all, it's free!

Not sure a film which only comprises start and end titles would be that interesting to watch?

This is a good place to start:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=30#30

There are a few encoders there that will take a number of video input formats and encode with the codec of choice (preferably DivX for high levels of compression).

Thanks DunRoamin but aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... went to the site and looked at editors, codec things, convertors and encoders then went in corner and gibbered... :( .

Can someone including yourself who is a super computer wiz just tell me the actual nice easy free thing to change mpg to wmv.

Have windows movie maker and it says sod off not doing anything with those files and as previously mentioned windows encoder will only touch the little ones.

Tried attaching one to this but doubt that will work.

How big are the files? I'm sure Movie Maker can handle 2Gb files. If what you have are any bigger than that, you might well struggle to get a freebie to do it for you anyway.

OK, try this one. Haven't tried it myself but if it doesn't work, go back to ZDNet and try for another one!

Hi.

You could try http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.aspx but you need to be aware that the Microsoft Media Encoder does not allow you to use any codecs other than Microsoft's (it's not like Microsoft to try and corner the market - bunch of anti-competitive ars*holes!). This would mean that using DivX is a non-starter.

On the positive side, their codec's (for encoding) are free but I am unsure as to whether or not they support generic playback of the material being encoded. It might be that you can only play the encoded video using Microsoft software but then again I assume that your video is destined for the PC desktop so Microsoft Media Player is widely used and normally the player of choice for most people.

Geezus, whats the problem here ?
I could easily set up a p2p server that you can download/upload shared files at will, with the abilty to get some of the file now and resume whenever you want where you left off.
Youd have to download a suitable client such as winmx, sunshineUn, or similar but I could set up a private server just for people here that want to share files, audio, video, software etc.

I think that the most pertinent problem here is that the video file size needs to be reduced so that the bandwidth usage limits are not exceeded?

The p2p server does allow the stream of data to "trickle" but the bandwidth limit can still ultimately be exceeded. Also worth noting is that 'Emule' is a fantastic p2p client.

Therefore, the topic has turned around to dicussing methods of "shrinking" movies down to a size that will use less bandwith allocation whilst also downloading faster.

There is no problem. People don't want to **** around with p2p clients when all they want to do is send a video to the folks back home, whom you'd also have to explain p2ping to. Hence my original post. I've got a ****ing great server sat at Telehouse in London with plenty of space on it that I could set up for FTP transfers or the like, but simple web-based transfer prog's like the one at the start of this thread are ideal for the non-geek.
