Sat Nav .... Tom Tom ... ??

Is this the way to go anyone??

I've seen the Navman for $500 odd or the Tom Tom 'One' for $800 odd.

I know very little about Sat Nav to be honest, but the time has come and it's just I've heard of the Tom Tom brand before.

And does anyone use one on The Gold Coast, does it work well?

Cheers ... :)

I've got the TomTom software for my Ipaq with maps for loads of countries, only used the Uk ones as yet but it has taken me everywhere i have asked it to, granted sometimes it has tried to take me down a farm track :scared: but i just miss that turn and it recalculates the route straight away.

We have a Navman and most of the time it is excellent but on the odd occasion that I am somewhere that is a new area and there are new roads it gets a bit confused but I suppose this is the same with the Tom Tom. It soon recalculates and gets you where you want to go though.

I, personally wouldn`t be without it as I cannot read maps!

I use my $15 UBD of the Gold Coast - haven't got lost yet or misdirected or stuck in a traffic jam :D

PS: Also got the $25 Brisbane, GC and SC - haven't got lost on that one yet either. And I can shut it up ;)

Bit of discussion on this a few weeks ago: link
Looks like Tom Tom gets the thumbs up.

BTW, one thing I like about Tom Tom is that it's fully portable, so there's no installation and you can carry it around when you're on foot. Does anyone know if this applies to other SatNav systems?

I have just got back from Oz and used my navman PDA loaded with Tom Tom Australia maps and found it exellent.
It did occasionally tell us we could get down a road when it was a dead end but then that happens on the UK maps as well.

I found it invaluable as the missus doesn't like map reading (not many women do) and it takes the stress out of all the driving. We also found we were more likely to explore more as we knew we could find our way back easily.

I have had a Navman Pin unit (the one that looks like a PDA and sticks to the windscreen) since arriving in Australia, and it has been a life saver. It has taken me all over Australia, and surprises some locals when it shows you a quicker way than you have been using for years. Also I have downloaded the speed camera locations from Ebay, and this must have saved me at least a ticket or two. Amazing little piece of equipment, if you are car buying, I recommend this as your second purchase in Oz as it will save you time, money (in wasted petrol getting lost!) and arguements with the partner. Dick Smith has them pretty cheap. Cheers

Cheers everyone, it looks like both (or all) seem to work ok, altho if the Navman ISN'T (?!?!) portable then the Tom Tom will be the one as I'm just as useless on foot ...lol

Being a bloke I don't ask for directions ...lol, but the added bit of being 'cab driver extroidinaire' I feel I SHOULD be that bit better at finding my way about, but hey, who am I kidding! ... :D

Gonna sort one out over the next few days I reckon, but have to first check if MY road is on the map as the local streets ARE very new!

No good if I can find the Sydney Opera House if i can't find me home!! ...

Cheers

Yeah there's a lot of empty streets up here!

Around the corner there's a new road that climbs upwards. We drove up there the other day and it's just plots of land with the little peg in the corner, all ready to go!

Altho a lot of that all over the place from what I see.

The next Generaration of Mobile phones will probably have Sat Nav as standard.... If you can wait 18 months, the sat nav function will hardly cost you a cent.

In fact Nokia already have one that takes a sat nav Attachment, however you have to be connected to the telephone network at present to download the maps, which makes it too expensive too run. Phones already take Memory chips and thats were the problem lies, in the Memory capacity, so the problem is all but solved.

Yeah altho sooner rather than later is the current situ, so went out today to 'pay cash, pay less!!' ...lol, and got a Tom Tom 'one' for $676 which I was happy with as hadn't seen it for under $750.

It doesn't have my street or the next one to the main road, but does have the main road! ... which is a start ... :)

Been up to IKEA at Brissie earlier and it performed ok. All of a journey up the motorway so not a lot could go wrong really ...lol, but it does seem good ... :)

afaik, the ones that are available now require one to be connected to the telephone network at mobile rates continously. I could be wrong. Sat Nav will be the big draw card for the next Generation of Mobile phones.

The Treo and Ipaq 02 can already handle sat nav.

I must check out that Medion one,
