Question salary

My husband received a 457 VISA from a company in ARARAT (Australia). He is a Motor Mechanic. They offered him $1000 per week. Will that be enough for us to live on for a start? please help????????:

'just' ... yeah current story of my life that is!

That $1,000 is for 2 adults and 2 hungry teens, if relevant, which I guess it is what with the cost of food shopping here!

That would be about average($44-$50 per hour)gross ie income tax to be taken out, at least 20-25%. So, therefore net weekly pay would be about $700-760.

As others have said, you need to privde a bit more info about your family, lifestyle requirements etc to get any useful answers.

If you come on a 457 visa then you most likely will be entitled to LAFHA (do a search on this site) if your employer offers it - but they are not obliged to do so.

Also bear in mind that it may be enough to live off "for a start" but the nature of a 457 is that you are tied to that employer for the duration of the contract, so you will need to be able to live for the 2-4 years tie in they will request of you. It is not uncommon for 457 employers to resist giving pay rises/bonuses/overtime to people they sponsor because they know the employee cannot easily leave them unless they can find an alternative sponsor (not easy). You also have to leave the country within 28 days if your position ends and you cannot find an alternative sponsor. All worth considering.

Good luck in your plans.
Steve

edit - seeing that the job is in Ararat (Victoria), that money will probably go quite far for rental (a 4 bed place is $150 a week on Domain.com.au!), but bear in mind it is miles from anywhere!! (approx 200km from Melbourne)

No weekends or afternoon/evening shifts

back to OP, Ararat, should have very cheap housing, circa 250,000 bucks for a 3 bedroom place.

So you may have very low house repayments if any. Hope you like the quiet life

Yes

The minimum salary level, based on a 38 hour week, is currently set at:

$59 480 for Information and Communication Technology occupations in Schedule B of the Legislative Instrument
$43 440 for all other gazetted occupations in Schedule A of the Legislative Instrument.
Taken from DIAC website
