Default Reason why.

Maybe this is why i can't seem to get a job?

Nepotism is favoritism granted to relatives or friends regardless of merit

Yehp it's a big part of the system in Aus... . even somewhere like Aus Post.... although thats once your in.

It can work in your favour though... I'm not overly worried about losing my job now... tis a concern but not a massive one... As friends in the building game have told me how to go about securing a job..... even at 56 with no experience. .

I often wonder how big a part Nepotism plays in the UK workforce now ?

Re post, They are getting rid of Night Shift across the country for mail handling and sorting.... I've been told I can stay 'wink wink' if I transfer to Parcel handling by my boss... There is supposed to be a selection process. I'm tempted but I dont want to continue with Night Shift which is where that job lays. So I'm waiting to see what comes up on day shift..... trouble is that Parcel job will be gone by then. Although Post has ever forced retrenchment on anyone yet. Always transfer to another area.... So I'm waiting, It's bit hard on the nerves with the major reno that I'm doing. Still tons of backup... so let see what eventuates.

.

According to all the haters on BE, it only happens in Australia.

I see some merit to it. I'll give hiring preference to guys who I know, over guys that I don't. This is due to there being so many muppets out there that say they know what they are doing, but in reality don't know shit.

In the Middle East you have to provide your photo on your CV - if you're ugly you don't get hired. At least Aussies hire their relies and mates even if they've been beaten with the ugly stick.

conversely, I would never give a job to some guys I know, because I'd be in a very delicate position if they F-ed it up royally, I'd rather stay friends than make that particular dollar if you know what i mean. But yeah, business is personal, most of it anyway.

Right. IMO, UK has only Switzerland to look up to in this department. Not that it is a bad thing, but really.

None here to speak of, Debs set up nicely now at her place of work, and most of her friends shes made are either single or there other half's into computers and office based work, not really my game.

I know for a fact that the last job i applied for went to a Aussie guy, he sat next to me in the waiting area, and we talked about where i came from and that he knew some english guys, very pleasant really - then some bloke walked past smiled at him and said 'g'day Karl', 'karl' looked at me and said, 'he used to work with me at the last place', he was driving a blue knackered up commodore (he had parked next to mine outside), i went passed there Friday that same car was there only in a different space, the one for workforce

No luck with short-term contracts? I found I had to take a 3 month contract to get my name known around the place before I had a chance of anything else.

I don't know what your job is but it might be worth putting an ad on Gumtree to offer your services just to get some word of mouth going.

Getting involved with a sporting team might increase your social circle and contacts, worked for me anyway.

Volunteering is also an option, I've been doing some work locally and it's amazing the people you meet that know someone that knows someone that might help with job.

There is a lot of 'it's who you know' around here, inevitable given the size of the market, in the IT game anyway.
