Really sick of the games !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it just me, or is the Oz coverage so bias?
We only get to see an event if an Australian is involved, then the only interview the Australian, no matter where they placed !!!!
We are really missing out in some fantastic events, because there’s not an Australian in it or they have been put out?????
Really fed up with it and will never watch another.

Channel 9 has been a disgrace - not a very auspicious start for Eddie Maguire

Re: Really sick of the games !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hehehehehe I remember how biased the Australian commentators are and it is pretty bad - I'm not denying it. Do they still have that pratt Norman May? You'd never even know it wasn't a Team Australia meet, he is so biased....However as an Australian in the UK I've had to put up with Olympic and Commonwealth coverage where they cut away from world record swims or cycles or something interesting to show the medal ceremony for someone from Britian winning bronze in the clay pidgeon shooting  or similar. In the last Olympics I remember seeing the BBC reporter walk past Ian Thorpe to interview someone who came 8th ;)

Made me laugh when I saw this thread. We were living in Melbourne in '98 when the commonwealth games were on in Kuala Lumpur (from memory). We were amazed at the Aussie bias to the coverage.

If an Aussie didn't win, you'd have no idea in the world who did. Aussie coming 2nd, 3rd, last? It didn't matter - they'd get an interview and a voice over about how well they did and how tough all the training had been etc.

You'd still not have a bloody clue who actually won though... Quite an amazing attitude to behold...

Thank god for that....I thought it was just me who noticed the bias...

I watched an athletics highlights package last night on 9 and it was sickening, really sickening to watch...The aussie bird came third in the event behind two other countries who were not even mentioned or shown having the medals presented, made me sick it did.

Beautiful country but when it comes to sport some horrible attitudes.

Yup....

Even though I'm well known for blending into the Aussie lifestyle like a Chameleon, I agree that the Channel 9 bias has been bloody ridiculous!!

When Caitlin McClatchey won gold for Scotland last night in probably the most exciting race of the whole swim meet, I thought they were actually going to show the whole medal ceremony....

Nope....

They just showed the Aussie girl getting the Bronze Medal, then cut to the bloody freestyle embroidery final or something like that, cos there was an Aussie about to take 12th place!!

Bloody crap...!!!

Anyone noticed how many medals we have collected so far? There isnt any time to show anyone else getting medals :p :p :p .

Re: Really sick of the games !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ah, so im not alone ;)
its not the same in the uk. we didnt always see people getting medals, but we did find out who won every sport.
i never watch that rugby pish, but i did happen to see a clip of a few people talking about it on the telly and they hinted that the ref cheated...........i dont even know who won or lost  but they were talking about the australian team being conned
to top it all of............
yesterday i walked passed the telly and heard them moaning about the men not winning golds in the pool........then came the best bit.....
thay said "except for two guys who were disabled" (not their exact words) but its what they meant.
how do u think they guys felt !!!!
their medals dont really count then, do they?
rant over lol
ps. your gonna laugh. i gave up my foxtel this week too. now im left with coonsil telly

I was so looking forward to watching the games. But the coverage is the worst I've seen. Even if an aussie comes 2nd, 3rd, 4th or where ever, they don't bother to tell you who has won !!!!.
I have to go onto the BBC website everyday just to see how the other countries are doing!!!
So now my TV goes on when the news is on ......and what is today news????......how the aussies are doing in the games!!! FFS

Sorry rant finished!! (Glad I'll be in the UK for the world cup)

Is Channel 9 not an Australian TV channel for Australian people living in Australia ;)
I agree the coverage is biased, but how can you expect anything any different, you wouldnt expect to watch the beeb and spend the whole time seeing Aussies would you.
The public are generally interested in who wins and where people they know come, Australia have won most things worth winning and the rest of the coverage has largely been spent covering Aussies, as this is what Australians want to see.
There not going to be interested in whether Daley Thompson has won the decathlon or not are they :D

Any sport events always like that, and if an aussie loses you have to endure the news opening headline as Darleene Ramsey aussie gold medal olympian tragically struck from the games and now in hospital with a cold sore :D

Did you not know the Aussies were sport obsessed before you got here.......?

My hubby is an aussie and has always commented on the bias in the UK sports coverage of such events (he lived in UK for nearly 20 years). Every country does it.

There was a lovely interview with David Davies (Welshman) when he thrashed the opposition in the pool the other day - and they showed the medal ceremony.

The games'll be over soon. World Cup soon - can't wait.

I did wonder that too  - how would an Aussie athlete & their family & friends feel if they trained & worked their guts out for years & years to get to be good enough to compete somewhere like the Commonwealth Games & then to not have their moment recorded & televised because Channel 9 was showing the medal ceremony of a guy from Bangladesh who got Bronze in something we dont even compete in? Just like Scossie was getting his knickers in a knot because they didnt show the scottish swimmer guy's medal ceremony, Im an aussie & Id be cheesed off if they showed that & not some aussie athlete competing.

Of course the telecast will be mostly about Aussies - just remember too how many Aussie althletes are competing, how many medals we have won & how much telecast time they actually have!

Blimey is he still in it ;) Used to fancy the socks off him :D Don't mind so much them showing the medal ceremony for each and every Aussie, but it would be nice to see the ceremony if another nation won something, but Aussie's came second or third, that way, the Aussie would still be on screen but we might here another national anthem. Nice to see the English whip the Aussie backsides at lawn bowls though :D

I'd like to see the guy from bangladesh who cares if the aussies were not in that one its the commonweath games not the aussie games. Besides the guy from bangladesh is probably an amazing athlete as he wouldnt have had zillions of dollars pumped into his training, I think the people from those countries should be shown, anyone can win if they spend enough money, nope Go bangladesh :D

i think its a case of being genuinely interested in other people and not just whats happening on home soil. i agree with the fact that we should be able to see the likes of bangladesh and all the other countries with very small amount of athletes - regardless of whether they win or not. It is a great achievement for them.

Everyone has missed the point, we know its biased & you cant expect it to be otherwise! And no-one has answered my question - given the huge amount of aussies competing & the limited telecast time, how do you think an aussie athlete & all their family/friends/supporters etc would feel if, what is effectively probably the biggest efforts of their life, was totally ignored in their home country & channel 9 televised an athlete from another country receiving a medal instead of the aussie competing?

If the BBC failed to telecast any of the UK athletes competing or winning medals in the commonwealth games or Olypmics, you'd all be jumping up & down  .

BTW, in case you didnt realise - it's all happening on home soil, just more home for some than others ;) .

i was only taking the mickey ,the fact is the australians are sport mad and are absolutely devastated if they come second the news is from the uk in general they couldnt give a monkeys and if australia wasnt winning everything in sight they wouldnt give a monkeys either and i do personally think it is shameful that they dont seem to be giving anybody else a look in in regards to interviews etc but to be honest really what do you expect .What i find even more shameful from a australian perspective is they cant wait to report on how charitable they have been to these poor nations in regards to giving them running gear and such like ,really giving themselves a pat on the back .well i suppose self praise is better than none

Actually its australian TV covering a world event, which includes many teams, australia has 231 races living in melbourne city alone, so I am sure many people would like to see other teams. Theres probably some aussies who are interested in the rest of the world too. Maybe they should all go to bangladesh as well.

Sport takes more than one team unless australia is just playing with itself  so show some other teams. They didnt mind showing Canadians when they won medals for australia did they. Besides its just plain rude to totally ignore who won the gold and just show how OZ went.

I wonder if the Foxtel rights have anything to do with what coverage Channel 9 can actually show??
Given they've got about 7 channels or something dedicated to it I would of thought they would pretty much show every single event from qualifying through to finals, you'd get to see everyone from every nation then.
The deal allowing Channel 9 to cover it may of only allowed them to show coverage of Australian participants.
Just a thought.

You say that, but a colleague of mine was there last night with an English woman. They cheered on Dean Macey, then hung around for ages for the medal presentation. Which didn't happen. They were just told, oh, we've run out of time, we'll do it tomorrow. Can you imagine that happening if the Aussie had won gold? I don't think so.

We've talked about it a lot at work (the coverage of the Rugby 7s only showing the 2nd half of the final, the swimming medal presentations being cut, not having a clue what the heck was going on live or recorded because of the cutting, not even seeing some events because there isn't an aussie in them...) but and even the Aussies get fed up of it after a while.

What struck me the most, though, was that when the large woman won gold in (i think) the shot putt, she was cheered and celebrated. At that point, you could have turned over to The Biggest Loser and seen a number of woment with the same physique being mocked and derided. Double standards anyone?

Still, at least we get to watch the games in the right time zone - the same can't be said for most sports (F1, world cup, etc etc)
