SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for Dangerous Surf and Abnormally High Tides

For people in coastal areas of the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast
forecast districts.
Issued at 11:00 am on Friday 23 December 2011

Synoptic Situation: At 10am, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina was situated approximately 500 kilometres north-northeast of Fraser Island and moving in a
south-southeasterly direction. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina is expected to continue moving in this direction today while adopting more of a southeasterly track over the weekend. The combination of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina and a ridge of high pressure across the southern Coral Sea will generate large swells along the southern Queensland coast.

Dangerous surf conditions are expected to develop about coastal areas between Sandy Cape and Point Danger during Saturday. These conditions are expected to continue across the weekend and could potentially extend into Tuesday. Locations which may be affected include Fraser Island, the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Island, Stradbroke Island and the Gold Coast.
Water levels on the high tide could also exceed the highest tide of the year,
which may lead to localised inundation of low lying areas between Sandy Cape and Point Danger across the weekend and could potentially extend into Tuesday.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

- Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- If near the coastline, stay well away from the water's edge.
- Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay
well away from the surf-exposed areas.
- Check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if
necessary raise goods and electrical items.
- For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The tribe have just returned from Brunswick Heads and confirm it is getting pretty hairy out in the surf.

There's a river running under my house at the moment. Down the bottom of the hill the road is impassable it's 2' deep across the full width. I drove around the long way & it's cut at the Matilda servo Curra, managed to cross there as it was only a few inches over at the time, I walked it first as it was only repaired last week While walking some tool in a little Barina drove straight through & nearly got washed away, he ended up missing the edge of the road & got bogged. I waved & smiled as I drove passed him, the bastard soaked me from head to toe
Glenwood to the North has fared badly, I heard on the radio, while I was at the fire shed, that there have been fatalities. The wild water response team were rescuing trapped residents. I've never seen such flash flooding, there's now 6" of water over the Bruce highway at Curra it's closed there & it's now been closed at Traveston to the South. Cars also washed away by flood water up in Tiaro.
My weather station has recorded 173mm from 9am Sunday to 9am this morning. Most of that fell between 5 & 9 this morning.
