I've found Aussies more liberal with personal information than Brits. It has been much easier to talk to people in parks and on trains without them thinking you're a nutter or you must be after something.
As for criticising Aus or the Aussie way of doing things I've not had any problem doing this with the Aussies I've met. Maybe it has to be a valid criticism and maybe it just needs to be put across the right way. From my experience of living in England I would say that they (the English) are not the most deft at commenting on other countries and other peoples

Sounds like it's probably aimed at Asian nationalities. They can ask the most personal questions within seconds of meeting you, "how much, ah?" being one of the most common, but it's really not meant to be rude.
