Cool, i just downloaded google earth and you can now view the moon too.
I might try and find the view that i can see tonight, its intersting to know whats up there. And it even tells you what man made stuff is up there and where.

The moon's phases are determined by the shadow of the earth being cast on the moon. So wherever you are on Earth the same shadow is being cast on the moon so the moon will always have the same amount of shadow on it.

It's a bit like a shadow puppet show. Because there is one source of light hitting a single screen, the image of the hand puppet will be the same no matter where you are in the room. If you stand upside down the shadow will be the same but will look the other way up to you.

On Earth people in Britain are standing the other way up compared to people in Australia in reference to the moon.

When we first arrived, it was a newish moon and we happened to be looking up at all the stars and were slightly freaked out by the sliver of moon being upside down. The daughter who didn't want to be here decided it was a sign that the country was evil and we needed to leave :rofl:

Do you mean lying on its back? Yes, i remember the first time I noticed that (in Africa) I was amazed.
