All I know is that money does not disqualify you as riffraff but it's a common notion...

Riffraff is like pornography or art...hard to define but I know it when I see it.

Yes they are. There is an awful lot of uncultured riffraff in Australia ostensibly lacking breeding...it is in itself a cliche.

There are also a lot of 'well-bred' Australians..I've met them and they are directly descended from the Uk.

There is a whole class of people in the Uk who have only just escaped the clutches of the riffraff..and look down on Australian riffraff...scorn is easily levelled....

Define "riff-raff". Certainly in the case of some posters I think it means 'anybody poorer than me'.

I'm sure there are some who would call me riff-raff, but I'd give my friends the last penny from my pocket, while others would be reluctant to give away the steam off their piss. So who's the better man?

You're the better man. But aren't you falling into the age-old trap, and one that comes up on BE alot, of assuming having money means you are not 'riff-raff'.

I don't know G well but I reckon even he knows that it's not about money; in fact, as he suggests, even about breeding. The fact he can buy a house outright in the UK is purely circumstantial.

I'm saying there is riff-raff everywhere - and that riffraff UK people love to laugh at riff-raff Australians but : many people who complain about their UK lives and then their Australian lives come over as riff-raff. End of story.

OK I'm riffraff then. .... bit of a contradiction though .... I like my life in Oz and in the UK. I can happily live in either place. I didn't leave the UK for a better life.
