Hi All,

Well, we always said that once we bought our own house and no longer rented we would get a cat. Any recommendations for breed etc? We both work during the day and have no kids or other pets, so we'd like a cat that's happy on it's own in the house during the day. Someone recommended burmese or persian I think, but I can't remember~!

we used to have burmese when i was a kid - they were lovely we also had an abyssisian (sp) who was a fantastic cat called Quilty, when he died we had a couple more but they were a lot more aloof then he was so we stuck to burmese. my friend has british blues who are also great - but not sure if you get them over there (i'm assuming your in Oz).

we just have plain simple moggies now - who are great cats aswell

Personally I would go for a Heinz (57 varieties). We had cats in the UK and one seemed to have a bit of siamese etc in her was a right handful.

I would also go for a female they are less likely to wander. Males do have better personalities though (yes I am still talking about cats)

I'd avoid Siamese/Orientals if you're going to be out all day - they like a LOT of attention and can get lonely (we have a Siamese who gets very vocal when we've been out, and is never more than about three feet away from me).

My parents have a couple of moggies and they don't seem to mind being left - maybe go for a rescue cat?

I've not heard of Heinz - need to go and google it! The burmese are very pretty, but we do need a cat that won't 'renovate' while we're at work :-)

We went to the refuge on the weekend but the cat's didn't look well. There was one cat we liked, but it seemed to 'rock' when it sat and Bert thinks it's breathing wasn't very good. We since spoke to our neighbour and two of their relatives bought pets from the refuge and both had to be put down shortly after. One was a kitten, the other a dog the refuge claimed was 2 yrs old but the vet said it was at least 9 or 10. So we've decided to steer clear of there and just donate food to them instead.

Don't get a Persian or indeed any kind of long-haired cat. They require daily grooming!

I would suggest a foreign short-hair, like a Russian Blue, or Tonkinese or Burmese.

We had a Russian Blue and now have a Tonkinese. They are happy to be left alone during the day (we're out at work too). They are very friendly and very talkative. Our Tonkinese has a wide range of different "meows" and has us very well trained to respond to her every wish.

The Russian Blue (Ninka) loved people. When we were out during the day she would go visiting neighbours up and down the road. But when I came home, she would always be sitting by the front gate to greet me.

And as Worzel said: get a girl not a boy.
