Interesting! JTL's theory is probably not far off the truth.

There are only 20 valid numbers, assuming that one includes the "tens" so even on a random basis only 5% should get the "correct" one yet at 0950AEST it is 37%. So there must be some forcing agent in it somewhere. :confused:

I guess we're supposed to answer it's so she can meet him again as he would also come to the sisters funeral.

Wol: In general people will not think of the "teens" and they will avoid the number 1 anyway bacause it is mentioned in the question. They will think they are being led. So the number they come up with has to be 33, 35, 37, 39. People will also think that 33 is somehow 'wrong' because it has two numbers the same. So in the end there will be an approximately 30% chance of picking one of 35, 37 or 39.

Numerically 35 is the first one they come to, and again their subconscious will suggest they are being tricked into saying it, so they choose 37. Most people don't go as far as 39.

So those who choose 37 are obsessed with trying to be clever, when they aren't. Which is most of the human population.

I resent that (having picked 37) <g>.

Your explanation is very plausible and probably 100% correct, but I think it's not a question of trying to be clever, just being "led" as in most conjuring tricks.

I picked 37 but I didn't have the thought process that Burbage outlined.

It went like this, two odd numbers, erm, 3 and 7, 37!

Or maybe I did think all that but subconsciously?

Isn't 7 the most likely number to choose if asked to pick between 1 - 10.? This would further stack the odds on this test

Yes, so he will come to the funeral. I had been sent it as a test allegedly asked serial killers who almost always got the answer. The inference being you are a psycho if you get it right!
Not sure if thats true or not though!

It's just about how the individual reaches the answer I think, the answer doesn't have to make sense.
The theory being a sociopath or psychopath would think in that manner and not worry if your suggestion was the facts or not.
