Default Printer recommendations

Need a new printer for home, printing for grade 12, some work done at home so used quite a bit.

But want economical ink/cartridges/replacement, which seems to be the hard thing.

Heard horror stories, and I dont need a printer which costs the same to run as a small car!!

Really depends on exactly how much you'll use it.

I'd start by looking at colour lasers, something with easily securable, cheap, generic, consumables. I'd only look at inkjet if you need to print out high quality photos a lot.

Brother HL-3045CN is $99 and ebay can provide generic cartridges. Dell also had some cheap printers, but I'm not sure if the cheap prices reached as far as Oz. You'll need to research around the area to your precise needs.

I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND an Epson TX 400 as compatible cartridges only worked a couple of times and now it's back to big $$$ original ones

The printer is irrelevant so long as you can buy compatible ink at a fraction of the genuine cost. valueprint.com.au is one outlet which sells good inks at a fraction of the original cost, eg $4.50 instead of c $30 for Canon BCI6 tanks. Free postage over $60 too.

Epson WF35** series circa 3 cents per page to copy.... supposedly cheaper than laser to run. As long as you use the 127XL's

HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus eAiO - fantastic printer, recently got it here in the UK for £117 with a HP £50 cashback offer. Get the XL inkjet refills, and it can work out cheaper than a laser printer. Can be networked (both wireless and wired), offers duplex (2-sided) printing and copying.

I reckon the solution is 2 printers. A cheap laser (I have a $35 Brother) with compatible toners for printing plain documents and a colour inkjet/scanner for printing photos and colour documents.
