Printer help??

Printer help??
Seeing as I am not very technical, I am turning to you lot for help.
Have bought a small printer and it is up, but not running!!
It is plugged in correctly and loaded to the laptop, but when I try to print something, it doesnt print, and then shows me there are 17 documnets in the memory awaiting printing??
Then yesterday when Jake turned the lap top on, one of those 17 documents printed, and that was it?
Any ideas anyone (told you I wasnt very technical!!!)
