Well having finally bought my own house (hate renting with a passion, may not be able to afford to eat for the next few years though!) anyway that is a different thread all together.....

So now I am thinking about putting in a pool. We have had one (all be it a crap one!) in our rental and it was well used and I know how much time etc it takes to care for one etc.

So to anyone with a pool what would you recommend? Concrete or fiberglass? Saltwater? Heated or non heated?

Any recommendations, do's and don'ts etc

Must be heated to get all year round usage. A smaller pool will heat a lot quicker then a huge one, easier to keep clean etc...

Get solar or if cant afford straight away make sure the pipe are laid for solar later.

Concrete is usually a little more expensive and takes longer but you can have it any shape you want and stays warmer.

We have a concrete saltwater lap-pool with solar heating. It's great .

It's only 1.2m deep which is fine for swimming and means it heats up much quicker than a deeper pool.

If I did it all again (please god not in this lifetime), it would be a fibreglass pool because its quicker to install, the finish is not dependent on how good the subcontractor of the subcontractor or whomever installs it.

With fibreglass pools there is a limit on how long the pool can be - at least that's what we were told. We wanted a 16m long pool.

If we had to do it all again... I'd buy a house that has a pool already..

Concrete, salt water and heated

We've got a vinyl lined one with an ionizer, so no chlorine or salt. Plumbing for heating was put in, but not connected up yet.

Think long and hard about it - its a SERIOUS expense to put one in. Personally if I had the choice again I'd blow the money on a boat !

How often will you really use it ? if you have young kids then they will never be out of it but the usable season is probably Oct-Mar/Apr so for a good 4/5 months of the year it will be too cold, solar heating or not.

If you don't have kids keep the money. If you MUST get one consider the space you have. We put in a fibreglass pool and if I was going to do another pool I'd get a brick/concrete with a liner so I could use the space properly rather than accept the shape given.

A pool isn't too difficult to look after yourself, but is a big expense to put in. When I was selling my house I had people put off because I had a pool. It struck me that people are now concerned with potential water restrictions in Perth.
Pools are great fun, we used ours approx 5 months of the year without heating.
Worth the hassle in my book
