With all the rain you normally get why don't you get a water tank from Bunnings and collect teh rain water from the roof? We do this and even in Canberra (which hardly ever gets rain) we have 2 full tanks for the garden

When i went for my skin check the dr recommended hamiltons factor 30,he reckons it is much higher than a 30 but thats the highest it can be advertised here.Not sure how true it is but thats what we use.

They call them 30 plus because that's what they are. The sunscreens do offer more protection than SPF30 but they don't say how much because they don't want people to spend hours in the sun using sunscreen as protection alone. So if I would normally burn in 10 minutes, and I apply some SPF50, I think I can spend 500 minutes in the sun without causing any damage - which isn't really the case.

Personally I'd rather know what I'm putting on but that's just the way it works here.

Even the Australians get it wrong sometimes.My 8 yr old son and Y 3 were having swimming trials organised by school with staff in attendance at a local open air pool.The trials were held 11.30-2.15pm last Friday when temps reached 30 degrees plus in Sydney.There is v. little shade around the pool and parents had been issued with list of items to send( swimmers, hat, snack etc) but no mention of rashies / sunscreen etc.All parents wrongy assumed trials were at the adjacent indoor pool . Those children were burned raw. My son came home and stripped off in agony showing red raw face, chest ,back.I`ve never seen anything so bad. he jumped in pool and all w/end we applied aloe etc to his poor sore skin. Other children had to lay in ice baths etc and some were ill all weekend. Cancer Council suggests everyone stay out of sun between 10-3pnm if possible.If not use factor 30 and cover skin as much as poss.Clearly this was not done for these children.

OMG I worry so much about this when my kids go swimming at the school - which is a hugh outdoor pool with no shade :confused: doesn't make sense to me! and the swimming hours are always the hottest part of the day :confused: is it just me or is there something wrong with this.

You must have been furious about that. Some things done here are warped.

Im a fair skinned pom and had a major operation on my face in August and had a huge sun cancer removed removed.Also lost a friend to sun cancer last year she had one on top of her head .Please lots of 30+ everywhere.even on your ears ,seen people with bits of their ears cut off because they did there face but not there ears.sorry to be morbid but here in oz its a fact of life x

To be honest I think that's criminal! How people supervising could allow that to happen beggars belief. If the kids weren't properly equipped they should've been sent off to sit in the shade somewhere.

Absolutely. The school has apologised to all the burned children and hopefully steps will be taken to prevent it happening again. The open air pool and indoor pool are beautiful brand new olympic sized pools separated only by glass doors. Apparantly future lesssons will be indoors. hope so .

I am very fair skinned

I get up i put on moisturiser with factor 30 plus sun screen in it from the cancer council (guaranteed spf in uva and uvb)
I re apply after lunch.
I wear a hat when I go out with a decent spf again from the cancer council

I go swimming in the sea in the early morning or late evening and don't sit on the beach.

I avoid the sun where possible but am still tanned

as has been said factor 30 plus here is more than factor 30
