To be honest, I don't often use Factor 30 - but then I don't tend to hang around in the sun. Even when I use Factor 30 - I still seek the shade - where possible. It seems there is a knack to putting it on - a fair bit is needed - it's not aftershave - you need a fair amount.

I get a ridiculous tan just by taking the washing in and out
It's hard to avoid, I reckon - even in dull and cold Melbourne

Firstly slap on the 30+ at all times whilst out and re apply it regularly, especially if swimming.Secondly stay out of the sun between the hours of 10am-3pm,and if after 3pm sit in the shade. Its nice to get some sun on your back but please please be sensible,my sister has had skin cancer twice!

and on the beach wear a rashie...can buy these all over the place like Target, Big W, surf shops.
If I remember correctly you have a small daughter? Make sure she is slathered in suncream as little one's skin is very vulnerable. My daughter wears a sort of wetsuit swimming costume (ie with legs) plus a legionaire's hat when swimming.
Shade.
If you do get burnt, aloe vera after sun to be applied every 10 mins!

I get tanned just pottering about and do not stay in the sun for long periods of time, twenty minutes. At the beach cover up. Even in the water wear a tshirt of something. Sunburn is no fun.

Check the uv index charts on government website for your location. It tells you what time to avoid sun.

To be fair though, I do find the sun in NZ really strong, even on the South Island....not sure if the lack of pollutants in the atmosphere maybe leads to none of the UV radiation being filtered out??

The only way you really could've got burnt is if you didn't apply enough 30+ or apply it often enough. I burn very easily but have never had a problem as long as I really slap it on (and that's in Queensland).
