Re: Political posts from Coronavirus thread.
So Annastacia Palaszczuk. I don't know a lot about her. She seems very rough around the edges. What's with the QLD border closures til September given tourism it's a huge part of the QLD economy?
Personally I avoid holidaying in QLD at all costs. For most part the weather is crap (except in September ironically) the Gold Coast is a total dump, FNQ is overrated, you can't even swim in the ocean without a jelly fish suit, and that leaves the sunshine coast and without Noosa it's also a dump.
Is QLD happy with this woman as their state leader?

Campbell Newman demonstrated that special negative political talent. When he was voted in, the government sector certainly needed some trimming, but even more, some efficiency-oriented redirection, some demonstration of the management competence that is often better done under center-right governments. But all QLD got instead was a crudely-directed set of axe-blows to the public-sector payroll, and corresponding service cutbacks to the public.
Newman also kept generating negative headlines for weeks at a time in a state dominated by the Murdoch press, which has to rank as another unique accomplishment for a LNP Premier. He had no clue when to back down from a fight, or when to declare victory and move on.

It takes a special negative political talent, in Australian politics, to lead one's party from opposition, to an overwhelming sea-change level victory in one election, and then all the way back to opposition in the next election. And all without any overwhelming political scandal involved.

Fast forward a few years Annastacia Palaszczuk seems to be heading towards that cross road. Some polls are showing a slight majority of keep Queensland closed while others show a majority for it open. September is a long time away to set a timeline for reopening and if she does open before September then she's going to look a little foolish.
There's a lot of business and jobs that rely on interacting with the rest of Australia. I suspect she's going to have to fold well before September.

Interesting reading some of the earlier posts in this thread. Seems New Zealand's hard approach was right after all. NZ hasn' t had any new cases for 12 days now and life is pretty much back to normal, whereas Australias slightly softer approach has seen cases linger. Well done Jacinda and her team. Once again, true leadership in a crisis. π

NSW - larger population than NZ. Bigger more densely populated cities. No new locally acquired cases for 5 days too. Ironically the rest of Australia is better than that except for Victoria who's leader, like Ardern, loves the sound of his own voice and thrives on authority.

That's hilarious. Total economic lockdown for 5 weeks with the aim of eradication - FAIL. Today, NZ still has COVID within its borders - FAIL. Adhern wants a 4 day working week to boost tourism - FAIL. This woman is a disaster.

Oh yes, but don't be shy, use the correct description - he's a wanker
This crisis has been tailor-made for Belt and Road Dan - the CPC's puppet in SE Australia. Auntie Cindy over in Wellington is their other lackey in our region
The left loves this shit - look at that silly woman in Queensland too

Big Dan is at odds with his own rules again. Sounds like he can't wait for a bit public demonstration on Saturday so have has endless weeks of reason to get himself in front of the cameras again.
Responding to questions about whether the event should be suppressed or the protesters fined for an illegal gathering, Mr Andrews said police had decided the safest option was to let it go ahead.
"Do you lock people up, do you inflame what is, I think, a pretty volatile situation given the depth of feeling on these issues?β the Premier asked.
βOr β¦ do you take a look and say it's by no means ideal, but it's certainly better than seeing that gathering on Saturday deteriorate into something like we've seen overseas."
On the flip side, NSW is at odds as to whether they will let the protest go at all, given stadiums can't host crowds, why should people be allowed to gather en mass in the street. They will be fining people, no one is above the law, no one should compromise the health of others. Bring it on.

Probably best under here as it's political.
The child care landscape is about to go back to the old scheme.
No more free child care from 12 July. Fair enough. This might be a real stretch for those who have gone from 2 incomes where both parents live at home and 1 parent has had to take a pay cut and keep working or a single parent in a single parent house have had a cut to a salary. Yet we need these people working and paying tax.
On the flip side, plenty of child care centres are struggling to get staff as staff are better off on the $1500 per week job seeker. That means parents who need to send children for work are having their care hours cut or can't re-enroll at all. Their job seeker comes to an end July 12 too. We also need child care workers in the system, allowing parents to work and also contributing to tax revenue.
Should be interesting how this one pan's out.
