Ipods use a different format to MP3 and are a little harder to live with for that reason.

Ipods use AAC an apple format... MP3 players generally use just MP3... although the creative zen can play wma.. xvid and divx.

Not sure about flac or ogg though

jake wants an IPOD for chrimbo, I havent the foggiest idea as to the cost, but will an MP3 be the same thing...............

Also, I think with Ipods you are tied to itunes to buy your tracks from, which I don't really like the thought of.

IPOD is the brand name too - so it's more expensive.
There are lots of differend brands of MP3 player - if you want to get him something good, go for MP4 which does pictures/video too. Does not have to be too pricey - look on Ebay for something from Hong Kong!

An iPod is a brand name, a type of MP3 Player.
You can play MP3 Music files on it, as well as other formats.

Yes but you have to use Itunes to upload it, whereas with all other MP3 players you just slide the track across as any computer will recognise any other mp3 player as another drive.

You could find yourself in a situation with an ipod, with somewhere where the are plenty of music to upload without the itunes interface.

Thats my understanding of it anyway.

gets bloody confusing once you through the superior music formats of Ogg and Flac into the mix though.

Yehp, look at a sandisk 2gig expandable memory and a brilliant interface and the cheapest "good quality" option for you.

we have got both...mp3 player and ipod...both do the same thing..just different makes...obviously ipod is by Apple and probably dearer and the best.
But alot of other mp3 players do the same job but just different makes and design.

Basically, if you want your kid to have any street cred get him an Ipod.

All other portable music players are imitations.
