I don't suppose many people remember the sudden rise of attacks on family members by Golden retrievers following their sudden increase in popularity due to Blue Peter?
There might not have been a rise in attacks by retrievers but retrievers have killed and attacked people. They are also not on the list of dog breeds that the media like to report on.I remember a few years ago when there were reports on rotties all the time there were other attacks that were on the local media but as the dogs did not meet the devil dog tag they were not reported on by the national media.

I hate walking my dogs round the streets because you come across scary dogs as the owners either just let them out or they don't care if they escape but when I go out in the woods there are dogs of all types that are as good as gold because the owners are the type that care about their dogs.I wish it was easier to ban some people from owning dogs because they give all dog owners a bad name.

there are some specialist potentially scary breeds which due to their strict controls on breeding and selective ownership to knowledgeable homes only, don't behave in unacceptable ways...

The breeders are selective to whom they sell....

We are dealing with tens of thousands of so called dangerous breeds, bred in back yards and sold to anyone who can come up with the cash...

Control breeding and ownership and you can limit attacks.

I agree.I just don't like it when some people think all bull breeds should destroyed whether they have done anything wrong or not because of a few idiots that have no idea how to treat a dog.

There are some great big dogs that are a mixture of all sorts just for some idiot to feel big. They are nothing like the pets that thousands of people have.

Anything specifically bred to kill, especially to kill large animals like other big dogs and bears, anything bred to engage in dog fighting, bull baiting, bear baiting, etc. Just what common sense would dictate, so the following conversation in pet shops becomes a thing of the past.

"I'd like a new family pet please."
"Certainly, Sir, anything in mind?"
"A dog please."
"Any specific breed, Sir?"
"Well we've got three young kids, so anything with very powerful jaws that's bred to bait bears and bulls would be perfect."

Bull and bear baiting were outlawed in Britain in 1835... Plenty of time for the descendants of those breeds to have been 100% domesticated..

So let's look at those breeds which need banning according to this rule of thumb.

Dachsund... Bred to kill badgers.. Small child.. Badger... Similar size.. Only badgers are MUCH more able to look after themselves...

Chow Chow... A breed bred for fighting

Jack russels... Used for hunting.. Have an inability to back down from a fight..whether that be with human or animal...

Cocker spaniels .. Prone to genetic rage syndrome... Sudden viscous attacks on anyone nearby .. Followed by a return to their normal lovable self at the bat of an eyelid

Shar pei... Bred for fighting

Beagles- used for hunting... Ever seen a pack of hounds not whipped in early enough after the kill in the field? I have... As a child... And having such a recent working lineage VERY hard to train..and they steal yer bloody smokes when you arentlooking

Chihauhau ... Obsessive neurotics with a tendency to lash out.. Definitely NOT suitable for any home with a small child

Boxers used for hunting boars...

The bulldog breeds.... Including the Great British Bulldog... Have you seen what sloppy joes these have been bred into? couldn't bait a mouse ffs.

Doberman... Bred for protection and guarding

German shepherd... Belgium shepherd ... Alsation... All bred for protection/guarding/defense...

Rotweillers - protection/guarding... You'll be good.. Just god help anyone who it feels is threatening YOU and your pack..

The list goes on ..... And is completely pointless...

Golden retrievers descended from the red wolf... Known to turn on their own

Kelpies... Working dogs with recent working lineage

Blue heelers - ditto

Australian cattle dogs -ditto

Collies -all kinds - ditto....

In fact I am wondering which dog breeds will be left after we have identified every breed's potential for hurting people.

I said especially those bred to kill large animals. As for the list, I think we need to maintain some common sense and only ban those breeds that meet the above description but have also demonstrated persistently over time that they are capable of seriously maiming or killing a human. When a Dachsund does this, as Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Alsations, Rottweilers, etc all have, then we can consider it.

I included the dachshund specifically because when I lived in the uk my next-door neighbor was maimed by his little boy Fritz... It bit his thumb off....

That's maiming... Had to buy the poor old boy a rolling machine coz. It's bloody hard to roll a smoke with no thumb...

Lovely little dog it was.....

A class mate of mine was bailed up by a Jack Russell in his own garden. It bit him on his old fella and damn near circumcised him with a violent head shake. He had to be circumcised and stitched at the local hospital. Oh how we laughed... for years afterwards

All those listed seem fair enough to me to breed out.

Indeed - control breeding by breeding many out, keep certain working dogs only if required and suitable for particular tasks (e.g. herding, dogs for the blind) and used for that task. Restrict ownership only to those who actually need a working dog.

Sorry, are you advocating that no dogs are to be kept as pets?

Or that only dogs that do not have a working genetic history be kept as pets?

I am confused...
