pilonidal cysts

My brother suffered from it for years, they reckon because
he is a bus driver...all that sitting down
He had to have 'salt' baths and the District Nurse
used to come round and change his dressing. It didn't clear up for
quite some years and even now he has recurrences

i've seen loads. in the operating theatre and dressing them at home (as a district nurse) there's quite a lot of research about them...men seem to get more than women..theres also a link with minor spina bifida too..the best treatment i have seen is surgery to fix it properly rather than suffering for years with a smelly hole.....
they are also caused by ingrowing hair follicles so i guess removing your crack hair would help..interesting idea for a thread!!!

I had a pilonidal cyst, infected twice. They cut a big lump out and then packed the wound with fresh, iodine soaked gauze, once or twice a week for nearly two months till the wound filled with scar tissue.
Bottom line; don't go there, those packings are the most painful things I ever knew. But then the infection was really painful too.

OH had one. I wasn't really sympathetic and thought it was just a big pimple or a boil. Anyway we end up in A & E with me laughing at him taking drastic measures for a silly boil. He finally sees the doctor after a few hours waiting and is rushed upstairs for immediate surgery to take it out. At that point I stopped laughing. I also wasn't laughing when after weeks of the District Nurse coming to pack his dressings it was my turn to do it. Yuck! Apparently his wound was in a medical journal. The nurse took a photo of it. Well that is what she said it was for!
