Default perth to sydney/cairns

I'm staying in Perth and would like to visit Sydney or Cairns. I don't drive and need to travel as cheaply and effectively as possible. Should I visit Sydney first or Cairns first and can anyone recommend accommodation in either?
Is Sydney safe for lone travellers

Thanks

Jamie

Depends what you mean by cheaply and effectively.

I once took the Greyhound bus from Perth to Sydney. It was cheap but it took three and a half days!

If you don't want to spend 3 and a half days, then fly.

Thank you. Was it a good journey in terms of seeing Australia? Was it fairly comfortable?
Do you recommend it?

I've travelled a lot around Australia, there are lots of great things to see but many boring bits in between. I would definitely look at the cut price flights that are available at the moment the rent a car at the other end.

For basic information I use http://www.pleasetakemeto.com/australia then Google to get more detail. We find it very profitable to do plenty of research before we go anywhere, it always seems to pay off for us. In some remote areas look at the coach trips, if they only run on a few days of the week that is often the only days that many of the attractions will be open.
