Perth heatwave.
Well the weather has predicted scorching temperatures for Perth - possibly going over 40 degrees over the weekend and at least late 30's for the rest of the week, even 40 degrees.
I tend to stay out of it but perhaps go for a swim when the UV drops at about 4.30pm or later and stay holed up in the house with the air con full blast. Today I had to go out and wore a hat and covered up pretty well, just getting more sensible in my old age I guess. For Australia Day I am tempted to stay in until 5pm, go for a swim and then enjoy the fireworks, but I have friends that plan to be out in it all day. The warnings were on the news today, extra ambo crews will be on hand, warnings about heat stroke etc, but I guess lots of people will ignore warnings. I feel quite ill when the temps get this high so personally, I wont be out in it. How will you be dealing with the next week and the predicted high temperatures? I so wish I had a pool in my garden.:( |
Re: Perth heatwave.
Drinks lots of water all the time (and some powerade/gatorade to replace lost electrolytes).

Re: Perth heatwave.
Being in a rather wet Sydney, I can't remember when there was such a hot spell in the 3.5 years I've been here. I have a pool, so I use that to cool off when I overheat- it is shaded by trees for the afternoon, and I swim in a hat and sunglasses! Since I have MS I am affected by temps over 35 degrees rather badly, so I have an air con in the bedroom, and a cool pack that I wear when working.

My fire brigade is going into high alert over the next few days. I could be busy...

I dont like going out in it, you walk outside and it is so hot it catches your breath, although there is a breeze out there this morning. They have predicted it to be in the 40's but I wonder if it will reach that temp or get even hotter? We are off to the beach with the dog after 4pm today. |
Re: Perth heatwave.
I was out watering the veggies and flowers at 6am this morning. It was pleasant...then...:p
No pool, thank goodness for decent a/c though. If we were still living in the rental we had with evap, we'd all be melted. Maybe we're acclimatized but the kids complain when I have the a/c going all day. One keeps asking me to turn it off because she's freezing and it's only set to 24C. I haven't found it as bad yet as that week last February with the blistering hot easterlies and the plus 40s...I recall walking from the car to my daughter's school and it was the most miserable heat I'd experienced. If this week turns into that, I'll be hiding indoors until after sunset...Perth has turned us into vampires. LOL. Renth, hope it's an uneventful weekend for you, fingers crossed. These temps and winds make me nervous. |

We've both taken Friday off to build our deck. It wasn't supposed to be this hot when we ordered the timber 2 weeks ago. |
Re: Perth heatwave.
High 30s here in Adelaide. We've been using the spa for hours every day. Cleaned it out again recently:

Dodgy as, but it works. |

That's pretty clever. You could always sheath the hose with plastic lemonade bottles with the ends cut off and taped together. That would heat even more IMO, plus get a black hose.
Alternatively I could cover the top of the pergola with black shadecloth and lay the polypipe over it in parallel lines, along the beams. Probably not as good as a coil, though. |

Nice idea, hadn't thought of that. I'd like to get 50m of black polypipe, coil it up on the roof, and plumb it into the circulation loop. Just not sure if it'll be too heavy.

Re: Perth heatwave.
Bloody hell it is so hot outside it catches your breath:eek: I have done the housework (half heartedly but most of it) and now sitting with the air con on and the fan as well.
I wonder if it will get to 40 in Perth today, at the moment it is 39 so it wouldnt surprise me. Looking forward to later going to the beach for a swim, bet it will be packed! They said there is a risk of the skyworks being cancelled tomorrow due to the fire danger. |

Oh and it did get to 41.1C today. Even Rotto made it to 39.5. That must be awful. We were out there at 34C back in late November and that felt too warm for roaming around the island (especially since you won't be in an a/c car). |
Re: Perth heatwave.
Went to Cottosloe Beach mid morning for a few hours. Probably due to the excessive heat the beach was busy but far from full.
Water close in a little dirty but better further out. Still refreshing in the sea but too hot to linger long on the beach but did a hours walk all the same. Don't do a/c myself as OH has an allegy to it. A lot of cold showers and disturbed sleep this week perhaps. |
Re: Perth heatwave.
Just had a swim in the pool, it was great.

Re: Perth heatwave.
Took the dogs out at 6 this morning but it was hot then.We will take them out again after 7 but in the car this time so they can cool down on the way back.
We don't have the aircon on but the windows are open and there is a breeze coming through the house though it is mainly hot air:eeg:This evening I will have a dip in my daughters paddling pool. It is hard on the dogs though one of them goes under the bed the other one is at my feet which makes a change from on my lap.He is so stupid in the heat as he will go outside and just chase the dragonfly round the pool and down the garden until I make him come in. Might go to the cinema and make use of their aircon tomorrow! |

We had a friend stay a few years ago that kept turning off the A/C, in the end I gave her a duvet and hid the remote. |

Doesn't need to be heated that much, just a few degrees to make it tepid. :) |
Re: Perth heatwave.
Trains were running late because of the heat so my train was packed. Packed with stinky bodies.
Got home and thought I'd like to go for a quick swim but lazy ass 17 year old child didn't take the cover off like I told her to. Pool temperature 41°. Air temperature 39°. The water was actually hot. |
Re: Perth heatwave.
Cool mid twenties here in Canberra and it's been like that most of the summer. A weird summer indeed.

Re: Perth heatwave.
Mid 30s today, then a thunderstorm broke just 30 minutes after we'd all got out of the spa. Back yard is being lashed by rain, and the temperature has dropped to 28°C!
 |
Re: Perth heatwave.
Its 38 degrees where I live at the moment, I was going to take the dog for a walk but as soon as I stepped out from the coolness/air con of my house into the heat, even the dog didnt want to go out.
Over it now, I want it to cool down somewhat and tomorrow when I work at the wildlife hospital I will be wearing jeans and boots  |
Re: Perth heatwave.
Quit ya whinging.
Dunno what the temp was today but played cricket in it. Captain doesnt know how to win the toss so fielded all day.... have to back it up again tomorrow  |
Re: Perth heatwave.
5 days above 37C and three of them 41C to 42C is pretty harsh.
I think that cyclone has something to do with why the heat is persisting in Perth at the moment, it's forcing north easterly winds over Perth which brings in the hot desert air. It's quite hot here as well. 31C here the past couple of days, and most of the week has been pretty hot for that matter. |

The humidity today is awful, I am holed up at home with the air con on full blast. I would love a decent thunderstorm and for the temperatures to drop enough to sleep well.
