Default Perth - General Surgeons

Hi guys

I've been diagnosed with two small hernias. Will need to get them repaired at some point, but being the world's biggest hypochondriac, I'm making a huge deal out of this and driving my wife crazy.

Can any Perthites recommend a good General Surgeon??

Thanks so much.

Barry

Dr Kevin Dolan, works out of Joondalup and Glengarry. He did my lapband and repaired a hernia at the same time. A bit of an abrasive Scotsman but what you see is what you get and he is very good.

Seconded. He did my lap-band and my gallbladder. Typical surgeon in ther personality department, but I like him.

I've literally just had hernia surgery 3 days ago and was also a mess beforehand.

I'm now back home, and a bit sore but it's all out of the way and was over very quickly. I went into hospital Wednesday morning, had the surgery at around 4pm Wed afternoon and was home by 1pm Thursday.

I had mine done by a Dr Lisewzki and must admit to being pissed off that he didn't take time to see me before, or after the procedure. Leaving the chats to the hospital registrar, so I wouldn't recommend him.

But as far as the actual surgery goes, it seems to have been quick and easy.

That's how the public system works, though. If you have surgery in a public hospital you don't see the consultant; you are treated by registrars and likely operated on by senior registrars or fellows with a consultant supervising. If you wanted to see Dr Lisewzki you should have either gone private or opted to be a private patient in a public hospital.

I was operated on by Dr Lisewzki. I assumed that the guy who had actually cut me open would come and talk to me about how the procedure went.

The registrar who told me that a nerve being damaged/cut was the cause of my leg being numb, and that I may not get feeling back obviously didn't know the situation. It took me contacting Dr Lisewzki directly afterwards to find out it was due to a nerve block anaesthetic they had done during the procedure. If he had come to see me post-op, instead of the registrar I wouldn't have had a day and a half being shit-scared that I'd lost feeling in my leg for good.

I'm just surprised that the surgeon doesn't actually have any contact with the patient at all. Unless you're private.

I think it depends on what's being done and why and when possibly. First Born has just had major surgery and we've been having consultations regularly before the surgery (all public system) and he was the first person I saw about her afterwards.

Major surgery, yes; something routine like a hernia, not so much. Especially in a children's hospital the consultant would see the child/parent.

Wookie, how did you first notice you had a hernia? Do you do manual work?

OK it's the major bit then. She wasn't done as a child.

I have no idea mate. I had inguinal hernia, which according to my doc can be done by something as simple as sneezing. I workout a fair bit, so could have been a consequence of something at the gym I guess.

What's confusing me, is everyone I know that's had one lifted something, had a coughing fit etc etc, and noticed a lump. I've not had any of these.

A poster on here went into hospital for one thing and whilst the surgeon was doing his rummage he found a hernia so fixed it at the same time. They had no idea they had one until they no longer did.
