Definatley a Dell PC. Saw one advertised the other day, $800 with XP. I have a Dell and wouldn't go with another make.

Personally I'd save myself over $500 and go with a second-hand beastie (with XP).

I wouldn't be concerned about the make as most components are generic anyway and you are paying for the badge ... however, if you are going for a new one and after-sales support is important then I have also had good experience with Dell. XP or Vista new? XP for me, I'd wait another year before any issues with Vista are shaken-out.

If you are just surfing and burning and not looking to play the latest games then $500 will get you a perfectly servicable PC.

Cheers,
Matt

Have they released SP1 for Vista yet...? No...? XP it is then...

As has been said elsewhere you could save some cash and get a second hand machine...

A lot of people get laptops here as you can salary sacrifice them and get the equivalent of your top rate of tax back - maybe 40%

We found that places like Arrow Computing and many others make up their own PC's so you can get exactly the right spec. You can also haggle - I got an upgraded soundcard just by asking.

Salary sacrifice is really aimed at employees. Being self-employed you may be able to claim? Try the ATO website?
