Paint

Never had problems in the UK, be it with spraying or brushing, always managed to get a decent finish. NZ and OZ - just can not get anything near the quality of finish. Adhesion problems, runs, drying anomalies, re-coating issues.

Getting really frustrated - is the paint crap?

I haven't had to do any painting in the UK but my FIL commented a few times when he was here helping us paint our place how the paint seemed crap and would often need several coats AND is very expensive here.

I think that may be it - every time you have to apply another coat, the chances of it going wrong multiplies, so thin paint = lots of coats needed = sag / runs etc.

Re: Paint

Because we are currently painting the house prior to putting it on the market I am noticing these things, you sometimes need 3 coats to make it look decent which seems absurd. Not cheap paint either.

Has she gone yet? Can't even have a conversation about paint without them trying to muscle in.

Well I've just finished painting the entire bloody house. I used three different companies paint, British Paints, Dulux and Taubmans. The British Paints, at least in the colours I was was using, was the best of the bunch, though the jelly beans, free with two tins of Dulux, did swing things their way for a while.

If your using oil based add some penetrol it will help with your finishing problems.
Don't mean to state the bleeding obvious but you can't put acrylic over enamel.
Edit:you can but it's a long winded process.

Why do you need to add extra things to the paint? Surely if it needed it, it would already be there in the tin?

This explains the brain cell depletion in the male population of BE barbie...

Does paint sniffing impact adversly on fertility too?

Gloss or semi gloss is absolute rubbish- peels off and needs several coats. This is despite sanding and undercoating. I hate Aussie paint.:frown:

Used to sell minerals to paint companies and we did a lot of tests on the various brands. It's always changing with formulae being adapted all the time.

Best we found for opacity (coverage) was Wattyl.

In fact if I was buying today I'd go for Wattyl or Solver.

Re: Paint

My own experience was that cheaper brands were crap. Then we bought a "slave for a day" at a charity auction. He was a painter by trade we had him repaint all of our rear veranda using Dulux. Not a bad job for a $50 buck outlay + paint. We bought his Mrs as well [$20 bucks] she emptied our well over stocked pantry, washed the shelves & re arranged everything so it was neat & tidy.
Could do with another one of those auctions:sneaky:

Perhaps a phillipino maid would help... You can borrow the rockingham 4 and get her in under false pretences of having young children (sorry, I KNOW kevin is past her sell by date, but they're a package deal) as an au pair.....

They break up for school holidays early next week, I can have them to you by Thursday?....

Did I mention their beloved Grandmother will be visiting them for Christmas.... And January:frown:

Normally it's best to avoid special promotion items of the big brands too. They make inferior quality batches just for these events. Opacity is the usual failing on these.

I've done a lot of painting recently. Dulux and Solver are the best. I prefer the Solver trade low-sheen paint - very good quality and finish. It's not cheap though - $127 for 10l.

I've never had to do more than 2 coats.

This is how to do it.
Do it properly first time and it will last for years.

That's what we did - one of those paint pad things, whole room in an hour. Glosswork is different though, primer, undercoat, gloss.

That was the same time people were covering up lovely old doors with hardboard and painting them. We have spent the last 40 years undoing the wrongs of the 50's/60's/70's. Decorating and life.

I had bamboo flooring put down a few years back. Took the skirting boards off while it was being done and discovered that they were made of cedar but had been glossed !

Lucky you. I'm in the process of having bamboo flooring put down, and have just discovered the skirting boards are cardboard. Or something like that. Turn into a soggy mess when the patio door leaks, I know that much.

Probably MDF, also called Medium Density Fibreboard, which is compressed wood pulp mixed with glue. When it gets wet, the glue dissolves, leaving woodpulp = cardboard!

Have any of you used the Wattyl Low VOC range and can give me feedback, please?

I want to use something with as few nasties in as possible but this stuff http://www.energyandwatersolutions.com.au/setup.htm looks a heck of a faff and, as we have the whole apartment to do, relatively expensive, so exploring other options.

Yes I think it is MDF. The floor man didn't recognise the profile and now we know why. Hoping it's not tricky to find some or we'll be replacing the whole lot.
