So does that mean if you have spent half your life in Australia you are not really British?

I feel very Aussie I reckon if your kids are born here and your Spouse is Aus, and you mix with mostly Aussies from day 1. It's hard not to absorb a lot of the culture.

24 years in England.... 31 years here.

I feel you are formed as a person in the first 20 years of life. So although i have probably only spent 6 years in the UK out of the last 26 i am and always will be english or british first. That doesn't mean i am not open to taking on aspects of the new culture i find myself in. I also know as soon as i talk i will be perceived as a foreigner, something i am very comfortable with and can lead to interesting conversations and experiences.

I am always a bit suspicious of english people i meet when i ask them where they are from and they come over all a bit vague.

I am thinking of contacting Claims Direct to see if I have a case...

Chatting about Darwin with my female, very middle class Aussie boss - owns businesses and race horses... She came out with 'I'd never want to visit Northern Territory, too many coons. We've got enough of the bastards here'.

I don't take much seriously but I found this deeply offensive to the point of compensation - especially as I couldn't say much to that as she pays my crappy wages - although what was simmering in my cowardly mind being 'I prefer to call them traditional owners'.....

Some people won't believe this story, because they say Australians don't know that word.

It appears to be a pretty popular word in North Queensland sadly.

I like the idea of NT resplendent in maturing round cheeses, like massive edams.

I was really shocked when I came here and first saw this cheese so much so I took a wee packet home to show my brother.

I have never felt like an Aussie per se.

I have been here almost 30 years (2 back in England), my first 28 years were spent in England before I emigrated. My "kids" were born in the UK too as was my (ex) husband. So that makes it 30/28.

I have always mixed well with Aussies from Day 1 and have no doubt absorbed LOTS of the culture, the slang, the Aussie way of doing things, however I am NOT Australian and never will be.

I am just as British as the whingeing Aussie is an Australian..........you cannot be who you are not.........
