my 12 yr old son recently did a council run/local business sponsored 12 week learn to fish course. give the council a ring they may offer something similar with the local youth groups etc (worth a try?)
we have found that when we have gone to fish, when something has been caught he just asks whoever is fishing nearby to give him a hand unhooking/identifying the fish- people have been a great help.BTW the people who ran the course presented all the kids with a kit and rod to get them started and it was a shimano- that seems to be the way to go

that sounds great mate, i'll try and find out if the same type of thing is available in the brisbane area

Yeah worth having a look- it was advertised in the local paper but worth a phone call or two...
