One down 34 to Go

am quilting a graduation present for Hoppalongs teacher ...

Quilt made up of blocks ...

Hoppalong got every kid in the class to draw round their hand....

That has been transfered onto pellon Wonder under onto patterened fabrics.. Cream and red for the girls, Black and red for the boys... Kids choose the fabrics...

Cut out and ironed onto a plain red 10inch square... Blanket stitched applique and the name of the child the hand belongs to embroidered onto the block...

Blocks pieced together with black sashing... And a black border...

I've finished ONE block... And have 34 to go...

I PROMISE come hell or high wTer I WILL get a picture of this quilt on her when its finished.... And I WILL finish it... Preferably BEFORE the teacher reaches retirement age...

So here begins the countdown....

1 block finished and 34 to go

Re: One down 34 to Go

No cramping of fingers... Its machined... It used to take me over a YEAR to make ONE quilt... All hand quilted etc... Now it CAN take me a couple of three weeks if I put my mind to it... And can MAKE the time...

12 down 22 to go

12 down 22 to go

Boys are finished. Now i'm on to the girls... Their hands are much smaller, angles are sharper, much more difficult than boys.... Slowed down no end... Funny how appliquing 13 year old girls is so much like real life!!! Boys are much easier, smoother, less trouble

18 down 16 to go

How are you embroidering the names? By hand or machine?

moneypenny20 Sep 24th 2011 12:59 am

Re: One down 34 to Go

Where are you putting the class name and year?

eddie007 Sep 24th 2011 2:12 am

Re: One down 34 to Go

Names will be Machine embroidered...I'm REALLY not into embroidering by hand.. Could have got them to sign each block, but TOO MUCH work, My baby has a couple of alphabets, even tho she's a quilting machine... Helps with those labels..

The class Name and Year will be on the quilt label on the back... Making it useable if he wants to use it...

Haven't done anymore yet, coz I'm watching the crime channel, handquilting, trying to get good tips on how to commit the perfect murder....

I need an inspirational quote fo the label

Something about hands... Future.... Inspratinal teacher and Class of 20011 who survived year 7Any ideas?

eddie007 Sep 24th 2011 3:26 pm

Re: One down 34 to Go

2 more found at bottom of school bag, so they are all blocked up.... Might start the names... Seeing as I'm stuck til those missing in action turn up....

Re: One down 34 to Go

26 blocks COMPLETE... Names embroidered, everything...

Now we have to wait for the stragglers... Before I can sash, border, sandwich and quilt.... Have given the Hoppalong kid ONE week to get those last ones in....

Any missing by next Sunday may have their handprint FAKED!

Because NEXT sunday is sashing day... Come hell or high water...

Re: One down 34 to Go

Ok update..... Seeing as SOMEONE (no names no pack drill) was interested...

Final handsd came home from school yesterday... Have been made into blocks and names embroidered....

ALL blocks now complete and last row of sashing to be done... Then sash rows together.... Add borders and I'm ready to quilt....

SO by this time tomorrow I SHOULD be loading the quilt onto the frame

HOWEVER... One of my Tuesday Group has just loaded hers onto it:frown:

And although the expectation is that if you have a quilt loaded on MY frame tying up MY frame and MY quilting machine you put in some extra hours to get it off, thus freeing it up for the owner of said frame and machine to get on with her own projects

Unfortunately THIS quilter hasnt heard my message and is currently unavailable... And has been all week every time I've asked her to come over and get quilting...

Feel like taking it off to make way, but if I did at I would "ruin" her quilt... So I'm just going to have to be patient....

I dont do patient... I'm a nurse, not a bloody patient.....

One more row to sash and I'm putting on borders:thumbsup:

Re: One down 34 to Go

All sashed, first 2 inch black border on.. One more black and red border, barrow strip of black again then a large cream and red border and I'm DONE... As far as the flimsie goes...

Then its marking out the quilt top and getting it on that damned macine to quilt.... Then binding, then label... Which will Read

" For Mr J... A teacher who takes a hand, opens a mind, touches a heart and shapes the future: From the class of 2011 who survived Year 7"

gorgeous wants to be included coz it was Ben who "saved him" so I'll hand applique his hand on the backing....

You know me and photos..... I'll have to get one of the kids to do it for me.....

Re: One down 34 to Go

Slow progress, had to show newbie how to add borders to HER quilt, then had to get FrameHogger started..... And support whilst she made her way 1/4 of way through quilt..... She's coming back tomorrow for more, then she should finish on Tuesday....

Slow for me, just one more border added.... All threads tidied... One more border to go.... Then its load and quilt..... have marked out part of the pattern...... The hearts in each hand....

Almost thinking it would be quicker for me to machine quilt on my"ordinary" machine, rather than the frame.... I have a queen sized fusible wool batting that I've been saving for small projects.... Eg cot quilts.... But I COULD use it for this instead..... Have to have a think about that one

There's a shop not far from me where you can bring your top, batting and backing and machine quilt on her frame. I did a double sized one in a day (first project) and a single in an afternoon. She has the templates to follow if you don't want to hand mark it all first. Just wish she did the final binding. I can never seem to get the motivation to just bind the stupid thing and get it done. :D

eddie007 Nov 11th 2011 4:37 pm

Re: One down 34 to Go

She is being loaded onto the frame as we speak.....

Wish i had those Templates... Tho i'm thinking micro stipple around the hands. A heart in the palm of each hand and then meander the borders....

Question is, do I use luminous thread that just arrived from the states for the bobbin thread? Or stick to summit neutral? Or use a variagated gold.... The backing is black and golds.... Makes a TOTALLY differnt quilt when you flip it over.....
