We have the same sort of thing in the UK in the run-up to an election
( probably the same the world over ).


I remember a UK election pledge from years back - "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime." We were supposed to be getting a zero-tolerance approach to crime, but it never materialised. It was all bullshit, of course. Just like most electioneering is.

We had to have police checks done before we were allowed to immigrate to Australia. 8 out of 12 Sudanese that live in Tamworth have been in court for driving dangerously to rape, we left South Africa to escape crime, and slowly but surely it seems to be creeping back up to us. If they can't behave themselves, send them back, (regardless of race, colour or creed)!!!

I agree (although not on the Andrews bit, as i haven't been here long enough to suss the politics).

Just look at what unfettered immigration has done for the UK. On population alone it's a bad idea and is probably why so many of us are over here.

And lack of integration of immigrants is a problem, be it black people in a white country, muslims in a christian country or Brits in Spain. I think that requiring immigrants to speak the language and respect it's laws/ways is a good thing.

It was a pain in the arse, but i approve of the Aussie immigration system, which addresses shortages of skills. Sensible. And i hope they maintain it, if not toughen it.

No its not. I approve completely. This is called a fair and planning immigration system adapting to changing needs for the host country and migration numbers from others countries. Sure its not perfect but what it isnt is the farce of a failed experimental multicultural society with poor migration controls....aka the UK.

Or maybe we should open the doors, let in anyone, give them a house, some social security and maybe make it so politically incorrect to possibly suggest that a person from a third world country who cant speak English, read or write with an inability to work, may find a harder time intergrating into society.

The Aussie gov. gets a lot of things wrong, but one thing they have got right is a planned immigration system. Compare this to the mess that the UK gov. have got themselves into. Aussie system generally works well, and as you say, adapts to changing needs. A friend of ours works for DICA, in refugee support and she tells me that we take 15000 odd refugees a year and provide them with the support they need. The big difference with the UK is that Australia chooses then refugees they want, on their terms - which is one if the reasons they police the arrival of boat people so vigorously. Howard has said that Australia will not accept people who have paid people smugglers to get them here.

Most people in Australia today are migrants but they can't remember the past since they are too selfish.
