I used to find this in London as well. Using an arm to indicate (as well as the indicator) was a good trick. Not sure whether it used to confuse people or just get me noticed but it was nearly 100% at getting them to back off and leave a gap.
I found that it didn't pay to indicate if there wasn't the time to do so AND make the manoevre before the gap could be closed. I never liked doing it that way but needs must  PS: You must have a long left arm :p |

I think it was probably seen as a request to change lanes causing London politeness to win the day over awkwardness.

And what do you think I was implying by that comment? Just asking as removing the second line (taking it out of context) could give it a different meaning.

The Minister for Immigration, Chris Bowen, has today announced that all new immigrants will be required to pass a driving test, no matter which country they have lived in previously.
Mr Bowen stated "It has been noticed that driving competence from other countries is not to the same standard as that in Australia. In particular, drivers are not used to the higher powered vehicles available in Australia, correct lane usage, traffic conditions and general road courtesy. I have therefore introduced this measure to improve road safety and reduce Australia's road death toll." Mr Bowen confirmed that the new ruling would take immediate effect today, April 1st, 2011.
