I would move to Malvern in a trace. It represents, to me, one of the best locations in Melborne's Inner East, and I have a lot of memories going there when my wife worked there.
You appear to be taking me seriously.

Posh and Becks are 2 of the most savvy people on the planet - more so than any trendy inner city wannabees.

[QUOTE=asprilla;7842112]A percentage as a good starting point ?! Surely it is a terrible way to set up a budget. I would suggest that budgeting is not your strong point.

sorry, not read all this thread but this comment is hilarious, only because i know gg very well and believe me budgeting is his art.

They are still plebs though. I guess not everyone who lives in the inner city is a champagne socialist or trendy wannabe . There are people with 2m houses who just have sussed it or have the focus to do it. Good on them.

I have read this thread with interest, taken in the comments about good suburbs and property value.

My little duplex is in dire need of decorating, previous owners taste NOT mine, the garden is awful, kitchen and bathroom need ripping out.

But until I win the lotto, it ain't happening so I will just enjoy reading about nice taps, crappy Ikea, granite surfaces and the budget it takes to put that sort of stuff in.

(says PP who is happy in her house/suburb but does dream of having a modern kitchen and a big piss off huge enormous bath)

So come on then people... as a lot of this thread seemed to be based on spending a percentage of your property value on a new kitchen as a reasonable guide line... what do you two think is a reasonable amount to spend on a kitchen?

Would you advocate putting a $10k kitchen in a $5m dollar house?

Now you are just being ridiculous are you not?
how many people have a $5m dollar home? It will never affect me so wouldn't even try and think what would be a reasonable figure. Quite frankly what one person who owns said price of home, another would consider ott. Starting point in consideration would be how long do you intend staying in the property and when will the kitchen start to look "dated".

As for telling people how much i would spend if i had a $2 or $5 m dollar home, would be my business, sorry but it wouldn't be a topic of conversation. If someone was thick enough and crass enough to ask i would say 'what we expected".Imo i think dropping how much things cost you into a conversation is bragging and more a thing that Australians do.They seem to be consumed by how much things have cost them and what they have (even if the are living from one c/card to the next).

Anyway once our house is sold we are heading back to Scotland to look for a repossession.Something we will probably rip the guts out of.Depending what % cheaper we can get it for will determine how much we outlay for everything.

Ridiculous no, stretching a point, absolutely.

I think the reality is that people spend somewhere between 5 and 10% of the value of the property simply because that's the sort of level people can handle as a 'reasonable' amount. If you are in a 500k home then spending 25K won't seem unreasonable and is probably in proportion with the average salary of a 500k home owner as well.

Think my ideas of spending x amount on kitchens etc, property, has changed now we are in our early 50s.(and going home). There are only the 2 of us (kids flown nest) and we don't feel the need for fancy or impressive things anymore. Our priorities have changed to going on holidays, seeing family, enjoying ourselves for the next 20+ years that we have left together. We have had the big houses and worked hard to get it, since we were 16 or 17.Now its time to downsize,(again) no debt, step back and enjoy life.(can't take the b***** kitchen with us when we cark it, can we)?

$5 mill house...yeah like theres loads of people on this site that own that sort of property.
The OP's question was that she wanted a 'ball park' figure costing of a new kitchen.I'm sure if they lived in a $5 mill house they wouldnt be asking such a question
Going by the 10% theory someone living in a $25 mill house should spend $2.5 mill on a kitchen...where the ****** hell does it all end !?!??!
