Hi all, we have a close friend staying with us for one month, who wants to travel to brisband, then gold coast , then cairns, could anyone give advice on best way to do this and cheap accom, the flight prices seem to be ok, but having trouble finding reasonable accom

Backpacker hostels might be the way...not as dire as you might think. Bed and breakfast places can be quite cheap. Ozstays has some good pricecs especially just now.

I can recommend Gecko's Hostel for the Cairns part of the trip, nice & clean (well it was 4 years ago anyway!)
