My first Winter ....
I always have lived in places where there are not seasons and this is my first Winter in my life.
And these are my impressions about this Winter in Sydney : 1). It is too cold. In my opinion I think today (27 June) it is too cold. :( 2). I get sleepy too soon, at 7 PM. 3). I feel a little melancholy or sadness. I have heard people saying that they feel mild depression in winter and now I understand them. And ... I remember that most songs tell about happiness in Spring or Summer, it is for a reason. I read that 2 and 3 may be caused by the hormone called melatonin. Do you feel something similar in Winter ? |
Re: My first Winter ....
The only consolation is that it is short lived!
For us in TNQ, melancholy season is summer, wet season. Try planning a trip somewhere tropical:thumbup: |
Re: My first Winter ....
I have always hated autumn...because I know winter is coming next. The days will lenghten now but it will be cold for a while yet.
Try to get in the sun (it can be a really hot sun even in winter with cold air temperature). Try some vitamin D - BUT don't self medicate, see you doctor first. Vitamin D can help with a "sunny" disposition. You may hide from the sun in summer so you'll still need good light indoors and some D. You will get used to it. Good luck. |
Re: My first Winter ....
Get yourself a blanket, a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows and sit on the sofa watching a good movie, this is my cure for most things and it usually cheers me up.

Blimey. Think yourself lucky you have never experienced an English winter if you think the Sydney one is bad..... BB |
Re: My first Winter ....
I feel much the same and this is my third, after a good few years of not having winter.
It's quite crisp here in Syd at the moment but oh my, what a beautiful sky I'm currently looking at! OP - rug up, get out there with your sunnies on and get some fresh air. You'll probably find it's warmer out than in. :) |
Re: My first Winter ....
it may be cold but it's still sunny herein Sydney
today is brilliant sunshine just like yesterday and the cold is not too bad with the sun to warm you  |
Re: My first Winter ....
Brass Monkeys this morning ... I solved this problem by staying in bed.

Re: My first Winter ....
I had to do the windscreen ice scraping this morning - first time I remember doing it here, although there have definitely been colder nights than last night. Thing was I didn't have a scraper, so had to use a CD case...and it was gone in a couple of minutes. Beautiful sunny day now.

Re: My first Winter ....
Cold out my way (Sydney Hills District) this morning, frost on the cars which I didn't expect. Can't wait for our container to arrive as until then we're in sleeping bags on an air bed and even with a heater in the room its chilly! :fingerscrossed: its due this week

In the UK, I never bought woolly jumpers as it was always toastie indoors. I am currently on the lookout for a nice thick jumper! |

Re: My first Winter ....
Winter here is cold but nowhere as cold as in the UK - however it often feels colder as the houses aren't designed with the same insulating properties as I guess it's not deemed necessary!!!
I actually love winter, love dressing up all warm and snug it is much easier to get warm when it is cold than it is to cool down when it's too hot..... Plus the end of winter brings spring a time for new beginnings :) I guess that's why we live in Melbourne - the seasons bring a sort of balance into life... Just a bit odd that they are backwards. You can buy melatonin in some countries, it is used as a treatment for Jetlag but as with every medication has side effects..... To keep warm and boost your mood how about going for a nice long walk in the evenings with someone special and then going home to a nice cup of hot chocolate and a cuddle on the sofa.... The cold weather is a really good excuse for sharing body heat you know ;) |

Lunchtime, grey, wet & 7C! Really approaching UK winter weather. |
Re: My first Winter ....
Toasty warm here doors and windows still open, I'm still in short sleeves I have got my boots on though but only as I miss wearing them the rest of the year. :D

Re: My first Winter ....
Bloody cold here today. Didn't get over 15 degrees  Mind you, I guess it can't have been too bad, we had no wood in the house and I couldn't be arsed to go outside to fill the box up, just put another pair of socks on. The husband's got the fire going a treat, probably up to 20 degrees now

Re: My first Winter ....
I'm certainly loving being in an apartment and no longer a draughty old, tiled-floor cottage at this time! So far we've had one heater on for a few hours in the evening to take the chill off the lounge - none in the bedrooms at all.
New office is another matter. Yesterday almost everyone worked in their coats, a lot wore hats, and my teamie also had on fingerless mittens  Ah well, the price you pay for a lovely warehouse conversion. :) |

I have an idea to feel happier or more cheerful:
I am changing the wallpaper of my computer ... I am putting a picture of a sunny summer to cheer me up ... It might work ;) http://0.tqn.com/d/architecture/1/0/...MLS_sunset.jpg |
Re: My first Winter ....
4°C in Geelong this morning probably 8 or 9........feels colder over here as many have mentioned due to the lack of proper insulation. If your up Sydney way or further North it will soon warm up meanwhile in Victoria we have at least 8 weeks of cold weather then some crazy spring weather will arrive. I hate winter but love Victoria its a trade off!
|
Re: My first Winter ....
The other night in west Victoria...0.6 degrees...clear sky, stars shining, no sign of fog or mist. HUMIDITY 95% - that is partly what makes it feel so cold.
Vic generally has a dry air climate making 30 degrees more than bearable. English winters when very cold have dryish air (except when it's raining of course:() |
