Any way hope it wont get to the coin flip because if it does he is flipping!!!(the coin) thanks lisa

OK - big advice here. Don't necessarily go where best mate goes. If they hate it and you're not too sure, they go back and you are left unhappy. Go somewhere else and both have cheap holidays to each others home.

Hi!

Only my opinion, but, if you have any doubts, I'd try Melbourne first. It's a beautiful city, has plenty to do, and plenty to offer.

New Zealand is very beautiful, but it's also very boring, and very isolated, and VERY long drives between one town and another. I'd rather go back to Scotland than go live in NZ. Same beautiful scenery, just shorter drives to see it. As I said, only my opinion.

Went to Adelaide not for us so no probs.

Then went to Melbourne also loved it for very different reasons, everything you could need on your doorstep, great shops, affordable housing on new build sites looked at point cook and sanctuary lakes sooo impressed. But large built up city ?more keeping up with the jones and after talking to a few people they all seemed to work long hours about 60hrs a week on average which was expected by employers so less time with kids and half way around the world so not a big a social network with three kids 4 and under..........

Not got any of those rose tinted specs on and knew there would be pro's and con's whatever the decision but the trouble is making one...

One day we do our pro's and con's list and say yes NZ definitely for us and no sooner have we uttered the words it follows by well Melbourne has got loads going for it what about when the kids are older will the open space and outdoor life be better than theater, shopping and good restaurants etc...

Has anyone else been through a similar experience after a recce or is it just us? I do think I will go mad before long I only told a friend today 'no we have definitely decided it's NZ' and now I write this any thought's may be very helpful!!!!

cheers lisa

This is the prob TiddlyPom(love that name) I am a missive believer in gut feeling and his gut said NZ NZ NZ!!! But then he showed me the footage he shot I thought OMG I'll be so bored but he assured me as out and about with family there would be loads to do did some reading around Welly and Christchurch and thought ok (apart from the bit I read on earthquakes but that another issue!!!) Then he showed me Melbourne and I said WOW but of cousre I was'nt there and all this was on film, we are very similar people and if his gut said Nz then that's it??. but can't get those Melbourne images out of my head it really looked fab. So this is why we are sooooooo torn. One thing he said was what ever we decide to do leaving the area we live in the uk is the right thing to do where ever that will be!!!!

For what it's worth, Melbourne is a better starting point, (in my opinion), than anywhere else in Australia.

We only ended up in Brisbane because OH was offered a job we couldn't afford to turn down. I wouldn't like to end up here permanently, but it's good for us for the moment.

Sydney is too, too busy for us. We've been down to visit relatives there. But Melbourne is beautiful, been down there to visit friends, and has loads to do whatever age you are.

Again, I'd say that NZ is very isolated, and very expensive, from what we saw, and from what No. 1 Son says. He lives 30 minutes outside Wellington at the moment.

If you're used to "busy", I'd definately choose Melbourne over anywhere in NZ.

Again, this is only MY opinion.

All the best for whatever decision you make,

Maggie ;)

We lived and worked in Welly for a few months. It was grey, windy and parochial. We had 3 earthquakes (rattle the shelves sort) and there will be a bigger one some day - the geology is for real.

We thought it would be just the place for us - but turned down permanent job offers after 3 months. It's too detached from the world.

It IS a photographer's paradise.

We love Oz.

What is the job situation like in both places? I think really you need to start there if you are undecided. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where you live if you haven't got a decent income and job availability. :)

Do you have to make the decision now? Can you not move over, spend a couple of weeks in Mellie then go to NZ and see the set up there? It's a big ask to decide when you're 12,000 miles away. We thought we knew where we were going to settle and ended up 40 minutes away. That's nothing compared to your decision but if we'd decided on the first place, we'd have been so unhappy.

Hi!

No 1 Son would have rather stayed in Lake Wanaka, but the NZs couldn't wrap their head around the fact that "Computer Geeks" can work remotely. He moved to Wellington solely because work prospects were better there. He has V high security clearance and works on specialist stuff, and would earn more here in Oz, but couldn't handle the heat.

He loved Wanaka, he loves where he is outside of Wellington, BUT, he is a country boy at heart. He grew up in the country in Yorkshire and Scotland and that's how he likes to live now. Personally, I don't think I could handle it, but I am a city girl at heart.

Again, I'd advise, start off in a bigger, "more to offer" place.

After 3 years in NZ you will become a citizen and be able to live, work, and buy property in Oz. Depending on your visa, given recent changes, you will become in citizen in Oz, in either 2, or 5 years, and have the same priviledges in NZ.

I'd personally rather spend my time in Oz. It's a bigger country, has more to see, more variations/permutations of things to do.

The one thing you have to remember is, this is YOUR life, you have to make the decisions that are best, (at the time you make them), for your own family.

What Pollyanna says is right. You have to go with your own gut feeling. The rest of us are here. We're making the most of the decisions we've made. It's a tough one, but only you can decide for yourself.

All the very best,

Maggie ;)
