Everyone will have their own opinion of whereis good/bad to live. There is also a north/south divide to contend with.
I would advise that you wait until you get here and check out the suburbs for yourself, most people get a 'feel' for an area.
Personally, I like it the sourthern suburbs, but not to far out as I like to be within easy reach of the city.
Good luck, I am sure you will find an area that suits you and your family

It all depends on:

Where you are going to be working
How far you are willing to travel to work
What your budget is (roughly)
Do you want to be near the sea, hills or don't you really mind (although that really depends on the other 3 questions anyway)
Do you want a big garden, medium size garden or no garden.

Once you can answer those questions it may be easier to help

Well, my wife's job is based in Edinburgh, we are not bothered about being near the sea but we do want somthing around 2 bed plus so that family can stay and be comfortable. our budget is up to around $450 at the most. it would be nice to have garden as we have 2 cats coming with us. We have notice on some of the websites that the hills look bigger for property to rent but to behonest we have no idea what Adelaide is like and what the public transport is like.

I agree with Jacqui. We've been here just over a year. We organised a short-term rental before we left the UK and then put in the ks driving around when we got here. Places we thought we'd like, we didn't when we saw them and we ended up buying a house in a place I'd not even thought about when researching the area from the UK. I even recall saying something like "***** that's too far from the city, I'm not living there". Needless to say that's were we bought our house and this morning my 40km commute (from front door to stepping out of my car in a city-centre multi-story car park) was 35 minutes -though I did leave at 6.40am. My return trip tonight (leaving at 4.30pm) took 45 minutes. Prepare a short-list by all means before you get here and it's really easy to find out all sorts of things on the Internet, but nothing beats getting out and looking. Asking about laces to avoid is very subjective and causes much debate and I doubt the chain of posts will provide you with any sensible guidance. All the very best with your hunt.

There's not really much public transport into Edinburgh Park itself, just one bus that goes all the way in for those that work in the RAF base. There is a train that runs alongside it on the Salisbury side, but it depends which part you work in as to whether that's any use to you

My OH works in Edinburgh Park so we based our search for houses to the North of the city so that he can get to work within 20 minutes - but now that I am working at the other side of the city it's me that commutes and it takes me almost an hour to get 25kms (that's at 7:45am, it's worse after 8am) Luckily I'm only a temp so this is my last week doing that journey

I would base yourself somewhere pretty central and then take a day driving North and North East and a day driving South and South East. Your budget should be find for suburbs in both area's to find something half decent and if you're only renting at least you are free to move if you really don't like where you are

Well I stayed at the Adelaide Shores Holiday Park in a 4 bed cabin. www.adelaideshores.com.au but there's plenty of places about for short term accommodation. You should be able to find something here: http://sacentral.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=57&cat=4873

Or try the On Arrival Accommodation with the SA Government http://www.immigration.sa.gov.au/sit..._onarrival.php

I agree with Wendy, Adelaide Shores Holiday park is a lovely base when you first arrive.
