The most awful lunch

...ever....!

It's probably me, yes, it's me.

You'll have to excuse this post because I have had a few glasses of wine, it's Friday night and I have had THE most awful lunchtime. (lunch was at dinnertime, it's now almost 11pm so the wine has been consumed because a) it is11pm and because b) It's Friday oh and because c) I had a dreadful lunchtime experience.

I had lunch with friends of a friend. I was really looking forward to meeting new people and expanding my fairly non-existant social life. Within the 1st nano-second I knew it wasn't going to be. From discussions about force-fed vegetables producing more allergens (or something like that) to Karaoke nights to joining the local amateur dramatics society I quickly switched off and went into wine mode.

I'm sitting here thinking how I met my bestest friends and what attracted us to each other and all I can think of is a)a similar sense of humour and b) a love of good wine and c)the same taste in men ;). It probably sounds very shallow but each to their own.

Will I ever meet the most fabulous people ever again

It took me 5 years to meet my best friend here and I met her volunteering in the school canteen. As a result of that meeting my husband and I now have a very wide circle of like minded friends. It takes time and you know the old saying, you have to kiss a few frogs to find your prince. The same applies to good friends. Keep trying (and drinking!!)

Thanks NB, I will keep drinking on your advice, :) Seriously, it's nice to hear it can be done, after today though I do wonder.

We have all been there. I have met some lovely people, some who are stark raving bonkers, some who are so far up their own backsides, some who have chips on their shoulders bigger than the entire McCain factory etc etc. Lots of different people in the world and I am sure there are some besties out there just for you.

The ' some up their own backsides' springs to mind after todays lunch, think I was the only one NOT to have given out a business card at the end. I am fairly easy going with a GSOH as the advert would say, I think me and you would get along fine. I'll keep trying ;)

Hell yes, I have been there - in Singapore, for sure. Lots of fur coat and no knicker types there, with whom I had nothing in common. (I'm more likely to talk about genetically-modified vegetables than maids. ;) )

When we moved here I made a decision not to go to expat meets or ladies' lunches and force anything, just let things happen naturally.

From a male perspective I have no problem with that!

Good friends are like good wine.........worth waiting for.I have lived in S.Africa for 17 years and have 3 friends that I would say were genuine...........the most recent one I met only 2 years ago and sadly I will be leaving them all behind this year when we move to Aus with NO idea when/if I will see them again! However,I have every confidence that there are plenty more good ppl out there...

People come into our lives for a reason,a season or a lifetime !!!!!!!!!!!!

I treat meeting people in this situation like a blind date - looks good on paper but you never know until you meet them.

Like you, I have sat through some pretty terrible lunches and dinners when internet dating. Decided from that moment on to just do coffee - that way it is implied that the 'date' won't last long if neither of you want it to!

I also think that meeting a BFF is a bit like meeting your partner - you just know when it is right!!

Been there, done that, a few times now actually - beginning to think I will never have friends like I left at home, not met anyone here at all who is on the same wavelength as me! Met some nice people don't get me wrong but no one that I could laugh with till my cheeks ache - I realised the other day I have not laughed once till I felt sick in over two years - now that is very sad!! Not had a girly night out since we came, good job I get on with OH so well or I would have been sticking pins in my eyes by now!!!

Last year I sat in a cafe with my 2 sisters and laughed so hard we were literally crying. Hadn't laughed like that in YEARS before and probably won't again for a very long time, yes it is very sad isn't it? So hard to get on the same wavelength. I have no OH so often stick pins in my eyes.
