I can't get the Bill Hicks skit about the Iraq war out of my head when news such as this somehow reaches my attention ... The idea of soldiers sitting there with a catalogue and picking random weapons to see what they do (from a considerable distance).

Yeah, there is the feeling that this was "we ought really to use these". Mind it's always been a weapon in search of a purpose. It's for air burst, so it's no use for bunker busting. It doesn't shred people as well as other purpose designed weapons. And it's not particularly good for caves compared to a thermobaric - which raises the question of why it was used this time.

It does appear to be good at raising publicity though ...

It's a bit like launching cruise missiles, they look SO much more impressive if you can time them so that the camera crew is on a ship at night.

I've been on a News holiday for many months now, I pretty much only care about my NRL tipping comp (to beat my ex-boss as a first objective) and whether we will flood within the next few days. Feel much better for it too.

Hence the reason I haven't posted here much lately. Life is much better if you avoid the popular media.

Nothing wrong with that - soldiers do like a big explosion!

I was always in awe watching the 155mm howitzer rounds going in - the noise and the way the ground shook was insane, and thinking thank f**k that I'm not under that!

shock wave down tunnels probably makes it pretty effective for caves

In general a thermobaric warhead is considered better, for obvious reasons. Maybe ISIS have hit on a way of defeating them?

I think the American backed rebels are their no 1 and a far more likely target.

I will be guided by you on this as I am not trained on targeting weapons or collateral damage assessment.

Do the US have big thermobaric warheads? The reason I ask is that if all you have is a hammer everything can look like a nail.......

Yeah, they do. Not as good as the russians though, who've put more effort into them.

What's that you are saying in my earpiece Sean? Press the button, ok but do I press the button in the middle or the one on the left? Right, I'll do that and get back to my round of golf at Mar-a-Lago. (No, I'm not a hypocrite Sean, I did criticise Obama for playing rounds of golf when he was Pres but I've had every weekend off since I took office because I'm doing such a good job, this leader of the western world lark is easy compared to bankrupting the Trump business empire at least 4 times).

Next thing Sean - I've tried being pals with the Russians but I think I'll change to the Chinese now after making out they were bad. Final thing Sean, which button do I press for nukes and is it Soeul or Pyongyang I obliterate, doesn't matter really does it, I've got to show the world you don't mess with Donald J Trump. I'll have to make sure it doesn't go off course and knock down that wall I'm building.

BTW Sean, have we found any evidence yet that Obama tapped my phones and how is the prosecution of Hilary going, I said she should be in jail and if I was Pres I'd prosecute her? What's that Sean, they've got some stuff about our collusion with the Russians so I'd better not pursue that one.

etc, etc. (get back on your high horses right wingers, just a bit of p*ss taking).
