Exactly. PPrune armchair drivers have really excelled themselves on this one, with the thread starting theories even before the aircraft was actually confirmed missing. Even now there are almost no verified facts.

Incidentally, someone on PPrune said that during a safety training period in the eighties they were told that 5% of all passengers were travelling on false passports or IDs.

I just assumed the stolen passports were a coincidence as well, I expect it happens all the time.

If forums were full of facts, and facts only. Wouldnt they just be called wikis.

Yup. The old man's passport was stolen in 2007. I'm guessing he's traveled extensively since then.

Blew it up old boy .. If there is no answer then point the finger in a few months.

It will keep the Crimea off the front page though.

Never under estimate how far the Russians will go to get their own way.... It's not as though they dont have form... September 1st 1983... http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/d...00/2493469.stm

Turns out the two known false passports were travelling together (tickets were bought at the same time, same place, for slightly different destinations)

So something not right there, but it could as easily be drugs as anything.

On the news here they seem to think it's mechanical error, they are playing down any terrorist threat at the moment.

Those poor people, that's my worst nightmare.

And? I bought 3 tickets a couple of months ago. One person is traveling a weeks before the other 2 and going to slightly different places. The one traveling is going PER, BKK, PVG, JFK. The other travellers are going PER, BKK, PVG, YYZ.

Could be something not right there like drugs or something or it could be completely innocuous like I'm going a week earlier than my family and meeting my sister in New York before heading to Toronto by car.

Maybe they couldn't get 2 tickets to the same place so bought what they could get and were going to meet in somewhere. Travel in Europe between Amsterdam and Frankfurt would be pretty easy to book once they're there.

Why not? Thailand, where the passports were stolen from is a hotspot for selling fake ones. Could be any number of reasons why someone would travel on a stolen passport. Criminal record? Previous ban from the county they're going to? Maybe trying to emigrate illegally?
