Having the plans in place beforehand is just sensible, that way the Emergency Services, Health Depts etc are all aware of their roles, and the individual staff are all aware of our own roles. Plans also exist for many other emergency situations, but the general public aren't aware of them until they have to be activated like this.
Precautions like the ones announced today help to keep people safer, so you shouldn't be scared, you should feel reassured

Cairns Post today was full of scaremongering hype today. Nothing like causing a good panic to boost the sale of flu remedies & face masks.
Is this part of a global plan to combat the recession?

Bless the poor wee thing.
I was wondering if the people were dying in Mexico because of maybe
\A) not realising in time
B) Not having enough medical places especially in the country, to cope etc
C) Being the epicenter (for want of a better word) and the strain being very strong there and possibly losing some of its strength as it travels...
But maybe not

To anybody in Scotland that is suffering with fever, fatigue, muscle aches, dry mouth, breathing problems, cold sweats, shivers, shakes and hallucinations. Don’t panic, you do not have Swine Flu.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says there have only been seven laboratory-confirmed swine flu deaths, all in Mexico, from 79 confirmed cases around the world.
[...]
Today Mexican Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said his country's confirmed detah toll was being reduced from 20 to seven but that up to 159 people may have died and more than 1,300 people were in hospitals out of a total of around 2,500 suspected cases of the virus.
But WHO communications manager Vivien Allen says the higher figures are not official.
"Unfortunately that is incorrect information and that does happen, but that's not information that's come from the World Health Organisation," she told ABC Local Radio in Brisbane.
"The death toll is seven and they are all from Mexico. It's more a question of containment at this stage and not a time for worry, the statistics, the actual lab statistics are not high."
