(Sorry Polly )

My grandparents lived in Hereford for many years - spent a lot of time staying with them when we were kids. We used to do the rounds with them of all the relatives across the border in Radnorshire and from memory I would say that the ones on the Welsh side were indeed poorer than the ones on the Herefordshire side

I don't know - I thought Hereford was ok when I was there...

I only remember watching Wales get slaughtered in the 5N, and various nightclubs where we all used to hang out and try not to behave in any way like we were from out of town...assimilation was the name of the game.

Funny how British people have less than spectacular opinions of English towns. Many are OK. Apart from Basingstoke.

Hereford is fine, we haven't seen anything there to make us raise our eyebrows. There are some beautiful houses in the area.

Hereford is not Welsh!! It is a bit west country-Gloucester but north. Rural and with cows. Right by the border a bit of Welshness may leak out, but the Welsh side isn't very Welsh compared to Aberystwyth and Bangor.

I know it's not Welsh - that's why posh Welsh people escape to it.

Aberystwyth is VERY Welsh. I worked in an optician's there for 18 months and don't think I understood anything said to me in all that time

Don't think any of us said it is Welsh, its definitely Englsih, but there's not much to choose between the accents - or the landscape in the border areas

I'm not sure anyone said Hereford was Welsh, it definitely doesn't sound Welsh when you go into shops or speak to locals.
