We need to buy some new suitcases before our next holiday.

I just wondered if anyone had any opinions on whether those hard shell ones are better or worse than soft/normal ones? Also whether the ones with 4 wheels are any better than the ones with 2?

I've only ever had 2 wheel soft ones before but am open to trying different types if they're better?

Four wheel drive suitcases are great, much better than two wheels.

The hard cased shells are good but can be heavy and the lighter ones expensive.

4 wheels definitely - was very glad of mine on my 7-day journey to the UK last year, especially as I walked round and round 2 different Istanbul airports.

We still go for hard cases, although when they crack they really go, which can be a bit of a bugger if you're on the outward journey

Samsonite still wins in our house although The Geek recently bought a Victorinox when his ten year-old Samsonite cracked in Atlanta and the ground staff thought a bin bag would suffice.

Just a thought - weigh them up, think in terms of luggage allowance, a heavier hardshell would eat more into your free allowance. To me a duffel bag would do, if it were just clothes for example.

Spotlight have fantastic reusable linen shopping bags... Come in huge sizes... You could sew the tops shut once youre packed and sew them all together... Cost you about $10 ..... Then you could spend all that money you saved on new suitcases on bringing me back a bottle of duty free!

Dont reckon anyone else would be looking for a bundle of spotlight bags on the carosell when you collect.. So easily spotted too!!!!

Am thinking of getting a couple when we do the proper move, just to maximise our luggage capacity

Soft ones- if customs decide to inspect your hard case, they knacker it. Soft ones are also less expensive to replace.

I was going to answer I prefer hard over soft any day, but thought better of it... Hence the sensible post about spotlight bags

Definitely 4 wheels is the way to go, sooooo much easier. Also we wouldn't have anything than hard cases now, yes they do way more and thus eating into your allowance, but far less likely to be tampered with.
