Eeek really? Windmills in the Dales! That's plain wrong
I can see why there's little need for cctv in The Old Nags Head or The Rambler & I expect bobble hats are the norm for the hiking fraternity.
Inner city pubs populated by chavs may find CCTV invaluable hence the ban on headwear in many of them.

Why is it considered respectful to remove a hat? I know it's normal practice in many circumstances but no real idea why.

Many stupid rules for hats. When I was in the USAF one removed their hat when entering a building...unless... one was carrying a firearm. Why, who the hell knows.

In the SAAF it was optional to take your cap off when entering a building but if you didn't and you then bumped into an officer you had to salute them.

Just like people have strong views about Christianity and choose to send their children to christian themed schools because of it.
Not really sure why this is debatable. In someone else's house you play by their rules. There is a choice.

And in the army you weren't allowed to smoke with a beret on.

"A woman who prayeth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head"
That was such a sweet victory, I would turn up for church after that in the most outrageous headgear and just quote that at him, poor man!!

If you enter a church ( C of E) you are supposed to remove your hat, according to tradition. However being a troublesome little vicar's daughter, I always used to refuse and had many heated arguments with my Dad on the subject. Then one day someone pointed me to a certain biblical quote from St Paul (in a letter to a bunch of Corinthians)
"A woman who prayeth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head"
That was such a sweet victory, I would turn up for church after that in the most outrageous headgear and just quote that at him, poor man!!

Clever bloke that Paul. My "O" level Religious Education exam consisted of pondering how he knew which way Damascus was after he was blinded. I got a D they probably decided that even though he wasn't going there to visit his granny the basic message had sunk in. I probably blew it by stating that it would have been someone else that wrote to the Corinthians.
My Dad used to read a lot of books about St Paul, and I had to sit through numerous sermons based on his teachings -made my quote even funnier, Dad just couldn't argue!
