OK, following on from another post I am in the market for a new lawnmower, needs to be sturdy and will get a fair bit of use.
The retired (numerous issues, not worth chucking more cash at) beast is a Rover and am tempted to get another so I can use the spares but I suspect there are better options out there.
I note that the council tend to use Honda gear, might be pointer?
Recommendations welcome ... 4 strokes please (missus) ...

I would go for Honda any day: I have one now, and the one I sold in the UK was 15 years old and brought almost as much as I paid for it new.
(The old ones are actually better - they have an instant blade stop. I still have to prevent myself from sticking my hand down the chute to clear it with the new one.)

I've got a four stroke Masport with a Briggs and wotsit engine in it - was recommended as the best buy by many people - I have used it and it is idiot proof. Cuts really long grass too!
Its a pushy thing though - not a ride on....are you talking about ride on's????

Yup, a push mower is what I'm after, we also have an ancient Rover ride-on but it's not been started for a couple of years 'cos we horse-sit and they tend to keep the grass down in the larger paddocks

I'm not a big fan of Briggs engines - I had one on a cylinder mower in the UK and it never ran smoothly. I discovered that the governor was just a flap over the intake: when the suction varied it adjusted the fuel flow so every time I went over a bump the engine sped up or slowed down. I replaced it with a Honda engine after a year.

just bought a new petrol one myself and used the Choice guide to assist. Its a little out of date now, but the Honda wins hands down.
Here's the top four - hope the attachment thingy works!

We've got a yellow lawnmower. I wouldn't recommend it - I would have preferred a blue one

The best lawnmower is the guy you pay $50 to every 2 weeks and then mows your lawn.

I've never known so many people who have contractors in to do the grass as here - I knew no-one in the UK who did but the majority around me do. Whether it's pretension or just idleness I wouldn't know.

That belongs more in the "Are Australians more pretentious than the Brits" thread.
