Hi all,
I'm back and firstly I'd like to say a big thanks to concretebob for helping me in my last thread and advising me which visas I may be able to get!
Anyway so I'm applying for a WHV and planning to go over there soon, find a job then hopefully get sponsored for a 457.
How hard do you think it's going to be for me to find a job as a writer/journo in Aus (preferably Brisbane but anywhere will do). I've a degree in Journalism, English and Creative Writing.
I'm not expecting insta-job, but I'd like to find one after a couple of months where the employer will sponsor me for a 457, I presume it's going to be much easier as I'll be over there and not stuck in the UK trying to get hired.
I've looked on SEEK but I'd just like some other peoples opinions?
Thanks! (oh and this 'credit crunch' character isn't doing me any favours!)

Hey,
I'm a journo, been here since September and found that there were quite a few jobs around at the time.
However, I do know that most of the major organisations (News Ltd, Fairfax, Rural Press (who I work for)) have been making quite significant cuts to their staff. So if it's newspapers you're looking for, it will be tough. Magazines and digital seem to be affected too, but not as bad.
There is though a shortage of journos in regional towns so if you're fully committed to the "anywhere will do" philosophy, towns like Wagga, Toowoomba, Moree, Narrabri are crying out for journos.
Hope that helps. Good luck!

They're after experienced writers in my experience (mainly magazines). Although the media studies phenomenon isn't anywhere near as bad over here as the UK, you'll still be fighting hard to get an entry level job in one of the big towns or cities. Off the beaten track you'll probably be okay though.

I did some graphic design work for a newspaper to pay the bills while studying. Rural town. The journos dept was constantly changing, with 7 journos coming and going in the 2 years I was there. Very high turnover.
If you are ok with work for a small paper, there would be plenty of jobs available I would think.

Hi,
Thanks for your advice everyone
I'd ideally like to be in a rather 'urban' area and not so rural, but if I have to go rural, I will
I'll let you all know how I get on when I go over on my WHV (it's either now or five years, not going into detail but yeah, shame)

My OH works for Fairfax . Quite a few redundancies but most in the commercial side.

Thanks for your help everyone

Unfortunately family problems have meant I probably going to have to wait five years, and I assume things are going to be much different then.
Thanks anyway
See you down under in five years time...
