It seems the English didn't start saying 'maroon' until quite late on in the general scale of things and all indications point to it being 'mispronounced' by the English due to snobbery. Apparently it was 'posher' to say 'maroon' than 'marone'.
English people who came to Australia bought with them the proper way to say it.
The southern Irish also pronounce it as 'marone' too, so possibly it could have come from the Irish immigrants, though wordy type people believe it's the first explanation rather than the Irish.
